Biography

Professor John H Xin (忻浩忠) graduated from the University of Leeds, UK with a PhD in textile chemistry. His main teaching and research interests include functional and smart textile and garment treatments, new functional material synthesis, nano-encapsulation systems with controllable release, coloration technology, colour science, including colour measurement and quality control, colour communication technology. He has published over 300 book chapters, SCI journal papers, conference proceedings, and patents and has been invited as keynote speakers and session chairs in numerous international conferences. His work in the development of smart materials such as temperature trigged fog-catching cotton, light induced moisture management fabrics, novel surface functional treatments based on nanotechnology, including repellent surfaces, protective, personal health care fabrics, and self-cleaning fabric has been valued highly in both academic quality and industrial applications and the work on temperature trigged fog-catching cotton, self-cleaning fabric was the highlight and headline news of Nature (Jan 2013, June 2004) and the self-cleaning garment developed won a gold medal in 34th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2006. His research in colour measurement had led to the development of the world first highly accurate non-contact measurement system for multi-colour surfaces, 3D objects, etc., which won a gold medal in 41st Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2013.  He is a Charted Colourist of the Society of Dyers and Colourists, UK and a panel member of the International Editorial Board of the prestigious Coloration Technology published by the Society of Dyers and Colourists and the editor of the Journal of Textile Institute, published by the Textile Institute based in the U.K.

Areas of Expertise

He and his research team successfully developed many new and novel technologies from moisture catching from atmosphere, unidirectional water transport, protection clothing (UV-blocking, water-, oil-, and soil-repellency), personal health care (anti-microbial, anti-fungal) and skin care cosmetic textiles, to multi-functional, self-cleaning fabrics. The achievement in this area can be reflected by quite a number of patents, over 100 research papers in the top SCI journals in the field of material science, chemistry, and textile technology. His recent work for smart fog-catching textiles published in Advanced Materials has been highlighted by the world top science journal Nature,493,580 (31 January 2013) and many other media. The work in the area of self-cleaning fabric has been the headline news from the world top science journal Nature published in UK ( http://www.nature.com/nsu/040607/040607-9.html ) and the 2nd generation of self-cleaning garment developed won a gold medal in 34th Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2006. The developments of nanostructured lotus leave repellent surfaces, UV-blocking treatment, and nano-encapsulation and nano core-shell particles for skin and health care, anti-odour, and other controlled release features set new standards for high value-added treatments and products in textile industry.

In the area of colour science and technology, his research interests are in colour difference involving textured surfaces, high fidelity 2D and 3D colour rendering, multi-spectral imaging and the research outcomes can be found in Journal of the Optical Society of America, Optical Letters, Color Research and Application, Journal of Electronic Imaging, Coloration Technology, etc. Recently, a world first accurate colour measurement system for multi-coloured textiles and objects, 3D irregular shaped objects (which cannot be measured previously), has been successfully developed. This innovative and ground-breaking system won the gold medal in the 41st Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions in 2013.  His expertise in industrial colour quality control and management, colour communication is well known in Hong Kong and abroad. He was the technical advisor for building of the only entirely web-based colour management and communication system and subsequently won the Best of The Best “Prime Ministers Award” in Malaysia, Best of the Software Application Award in Asia Pacific Information and Communication Technology 2002, and a few other awards. He also coordinated the development of a renowned commercial colour management system when worked in the UK. He has conducted many consultancy works in the area of colour management for supply chain, colour communication via electronic means, and colour evaluation and organised many industrial training courses.

Professor Xin also delivers lectures on topics of nanotechnologies and their applications to textiles, smart and functional materials for textile applications, skin protection and cosmetic textiles, coloration technologies and colour measurement techniques.

He successfully supervised and is now supervising more than 20 PhD students as a chief supervisor, and many more, as a co-supervisor.
