BA knitwear design students showcased show talents in at Colorama Award Event
Achievements

Four Year 3 knitwear design and technology students in the BA programme, Reza Chan, Carmen Li, Jade Luk and Winnie Yip, were shortlisted at the Colorama Award for Sustainability 2019 organised by Global Compact Network Italia. This international competition attracted the participation of a number of students from renowned fashion design schools, such as the Raffles Design Institute of Guangzhou; International Fashion Academy in France;  Designskolen Kolding in Denmark; Academy of Art University in the USA, etc.

The knitwear design team presented a joyful collection titled "Let's meet in the circus'. The team members are very concerned about the well being of wild animals, such as those that are being captured to perform in circuses, or skinned for garments or fashion accessories. By applying circus-related colourful patterns in their digital capsule collection, the team showed a hidden message - behind the "joyful" entertainment are the cruel realities of animals.

Collection encourages use of sustainable materials in lieu of fur and animal skin in fashion industry.

About the competition

The Colorama Award is a competition promoted by Filmar SpA and held twice a year to inspire fashion students to develop innovative proposals that address seasonal color forecasts for yarns. This year, Colorama invited students from all over the world to develop an innovative and fashionable digital capsule collection through mood boards inspired by at least one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations member states, and expressing, at the same time, colour and texture trends for Spring/Summer 2020. The contest aims to encourage the younger generations to reflect on the different dimensions of sustainability by rewarding project ideas that best express the values and priorities of the SDGs.

The shortlisted projects were selected by a jury composed of experts in the fashion sector, journalists, entrepreneurs, fashion designers and professors of the most renowned Italian fashion and design universities. The digital capsule collection designed for Spring/Summer 2020 was presented at Pitti Filati, a leading knitwear expo in Italy. The results were announced on 24 January 2019 at Pitti Filati. The first place winner is a student from the Raffles Design Institute, who received a cash award of 1550 Euro dollars.
