PolyCompass: An AI-Powered APP for Student Learning and Well-being

Imagine starting your university day not by wading through fifty unread emails and three different portals, but by glancing at a single, intelligent feed that knows exactly what you need to do. For many students today, the "digital campus" feels more like a digital maze. Information overload creates constant background noise, while the lack of a unified, verified workspace makes finding collaborators feel like a game of chance. Perhaps most concerning is the "well-being gap"—where fragmented support systems and privacy concerns often prevent students from seeking help until a challenge becomes a crisis.

To bridge these gaps, Dr LI Haoyang, Research Assistant Professor, Department of Computing, has developed PolyCompass, an AI-powered ecosystem designed to act as a seamless digital co-pilot. Built on a Large Language Model (LLM) architecture, the platform doesn't just store information; it understands it. The smart assistant module pulls from a real-time, campus-specific knowledge base. Instead of hunting for deadlines, students receive an actionable, structured stream of summaries and tiered reminders, drastically reducing cognitive load and administrative stress.

Beyond managing tasks, PolyCompass fosters a trusted campus network. It replaces fragmented social groups with a secure environment where students can find project partners through an intelligent recommendation engine. By centralising tools like GitHub and Notion into a single dashboard view, the app ensures that collaboration is intuitive rather than exhausting.

Crucially, the mental-health care module prioritises the person behind the desk. It offers an anonymous forum for community feedback and a confidential hub for self-assessment. By using AI-driven guidance and user-friendly visualisations of daily moods and activities, PolyCompass empowers students to track their own well-being trends, offering personalised self-care tips before stress peaks.

The impact of PolyCompass extends far beyond the individual. For faculty, it reduces the burden of repetitive inquiries, while providing anonymised, data-driven insights to improve campus services. This project is a cornerstone of PolyU Education 4.0—an AI-empowered, student-centred model that proves technology is at its best when it serves human connection and health.

This project is awarded under the Teaching Development Grant 2025–28 in the Theme-based Projects category (Individual Project).
