Fostering a Global Learning Community: A Multi-discipline and Cross-institutional Deployment of an AI-powered Virtual Tutor

Fostering a Global Learning Community: A Multi-discipline and Cross-institutional Deployment of an AI-powered Virtual Tutor

APSS_Rodney_VATThe contemporary learner is a digital native, navigating a world that demands instant connectivity and constant multitasking. However, traditional educational structures often struggle to keep pace with this need for immediacy, leaving students feeling isolated during after-hours study and educators disconnected from their students' real-time progress. The challenge lies in creating a learning environment that is as mobile and responsive as the students themselves, bridging the gap between physical classrooms and the digital reality of a globalised world.

In response to this, Dr Rodney CHU, Senior Lecturer of Department of Applied Social Sciences has united a visionary consortium of scholars from across PolyU, The City University of Hong Kong, and The University of Toronto to deploy a revolutionary AI-powered Virtual Tutor. At the heart of this initiative is the TIMS framework—an acronym for Technology integration, Interdisciplinary collaboration, Multi-modal assessment, and Student-staff partnership. This award-winning concept is brought to life through the Virtual Assistant TIMS (VAT) platform, which cleverly operates within WhatsApp. By utilising a communication tool that is already a staple of daily life, the project transforms a simple messaging app into a 24/7 global learning hub. This allows students—ranging from first-year undergraduates to international adult learners in MOOCs—to engage with course materials and receive AI-driven guidance anywhere, at any time.

The special feature of this platform extends beyond mere convenience; it fosters a radical transparency in the teacher-student dynamic. As students interact with the GenAI chatbot, educators gain an exciting, real-time window into their students' understanding and interests. This immediate data allows teachers to reflect on their pedagogical impact and adjust their strategies on the fly, ensuring that learning goals are not just set, but met. By encouraging peer sharing and collaborative partnerships, the VAT platform turns the solitary act of online study into a vibrant, interactive community experience that transcends disciplinary and geographical borders.

This ambitious deployment stands as a testament to the future-focused spirit of PolyU Education 4.0. By harmonising cutting-edge EdTech with a deeply student-centred philosophy, the project empowers our global community with intelligent, accessible tools, we create a learning experience that is truly limitless.

This project is awarded under the Teaching Development Grant 2025–28 in the Theme-based Projects category (Individual Project).
