What is PolyU Education 4.0?

PolyU Education 4.0 (E4.0) is an initiative launched in 2025 in response to the advancement of AI and the challenges of a rapidly changing educational landscape. The aim is to transform education to student-centric learning and teaching by utilising AI and advanced technologies.

For decades, education has largely followed a uniform approach—teachers decide what and how students learn. PolyU E4.0 represents a shift towards empowering students to take ownership of their learning.

An AI-empowered learning environment aims to provide a personalised, interactive, and flexible education. Students engage in active learning through discussion, exploration, and application, while teachers evolve into advisors and facilitators who mentor students, guide them through resources, and inspire critical thinking.

PolyU E4.0 is not a single project; it is a shared vision that brings together educators, students and administrators to transform the future of higher education.

Why Now?

The world is entering the era of AI. PolyU is transforming early and decisively to harness these powerful forces of change:

  • Explosive growth of AI and smart technologies: AI is redefining knowledge creation and problem‑solving. We see it as a powerful ally to amplify human intelligence, not replace it.
  • New generations of learners: Generation Z and Generation Alpha are curious, digital and globally connected. They expect learning that is flexible, immersive and meaningful.
  • Re‑shaping of higher education: Conventional models cannot fully meet emerging needs. E4.0 positions PolyU at the forefront of a new, AI‑augmented university experience.

Our goal is to move from reacting to change to leading it.

E4.0 Transformation Framework

Architected by Professor CAO Jiannong—an AI expert who leads the transformation of PolyU’s educational offerings, and who also serves as the Vice President (Education) and the Director of IHERD—the framework adopts a layered structure to guide the design and implementation of this transformation.

It was built on a foundation of digital excellence and AI literacy, providing a clear path to improve educational processes and pioneer new ways of learning.

We are developing and using AI as tools for learning and teaching, enabling active and personalised learning, intelligent tutoring, real-time assessment and feedback, and collaboration; improving student well-being; enhancing teaching quality. 

 

Digital Transformation

We are developing the strategic integration of cutting-edge technologies and connected data across all university areas. By harmonising people, processes, and culture, it drives a systemic shift to advance our transformation goals and deliver sustainable value.
