Health, Safety and Environment Office will arrange three safety courses in December 2012 as follows:


a) Safety of Radioactive Substances

b) Laser Safety Course

c) Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment



Safety of Radioactive Substances

6 December 2012 (Thur)

5.Principles of radiological protection

6.Legal requirements and radiological protection requirements of PolyU

Course objectives:
To equip the attendees with basic radiation safety knowledge to meet the pre-requisite for registration as a registered radiation user in PolyU.


Target group(s):
Potential users of radioactive substances (sealed and unsealed sources)

All users of unsealed sources and certain kinds of sealed sources must register with HSEO before they are allowed to handle radioactive substances in PolyU.Only users who have completed proper safety training are eligible to apply for the registration.Attendees of this training are considered to have met the training requirements.


(Similar training given by other organizations may be considered to meet the training requirements.They should give details of the training to HSEO for consideration of exemption on training requirements when they apply for the registration.)

Laser Safety Cours

Course objectives:
The course aims to provide basic safety training for personnel working with or intended to work with laser equipment.


Target group(s):
Potential users of high-power (class 3B or 4) laser equipment.


Users of high-power laser equipment must have received proper laser safety training before they are authorized by their corresponding departments to operate high?power laser equipment. Attendees of this course are considered to have fulfilled this requirement.


Personnel who have already completed the Laser Safety training module under HSEO’s Online Safety Training and Registration System (STRS) are considered to have met the training requirements.They are welcome to take this course as reinforcement.

Selection and Use of Personal Protective Equipment

1.Selection & use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

2.Inspection & maintenance of PPE

3.Proper storage of PPE

Course objectives:
The course is designed to provide participants with basic understanding on the selection, use, inspection, maintenance and proper storage of personal protective equipment (PPE).


It will be split into 3 sessions. The last two sessions will emphasize on the proper and actual use of half-face respirator and safety harness & accessory (11:00-11:30 for actual usage of half-face respirator, 11:30-12:00 for actual usage of safety harness and accessory). In the PPE usage demonstration, users of PPE having personal hygiene concern such as respiratory and safety harness shall bring along their own set.


Target group(s):
All DHSOs (department/office using PPE) and PPE users are welcome.
