Support Earth Hour 2012

Dear all staff and students,

You may note that Earth Hour 2012 is drawing near through the mass media. This is a global campaign launched by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) since 2007 to take a stand against climate change. PolyU continues to support this meaningful event with involvement of our students, staff and alumni. Earth Hour is more than switching off lights for one hour once a year. It is all about giving people a voice on the future of our planet and working together to create a sustainable low-carbon future.  Earth Hour 2012 will be held this year on 31 March (this Saturday) from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm. PolyU will switch off most non-essential lighting during this period. In addition, we would like to invite you to support this campaign personally in the following areas:

(1)   Turn off unnecessary lighting at your office or home during that period of time
(2)   Tell your families, friends, and everyone you know about Earth Hour and support this event
(3)   Start to live a sustainable lifestyle by (as recommended by WWF) :

  • making full use of daylight and turning off unnecessary lights
  • replacing old-style incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lights or LED lights
  • turning off equipment, appliances when they are not in use
  • setting the air-conditioning default temperature to 25°C
  • using exterior shading devices or plants to shade your rooms from direct sunlight
  • driving less and using public transport more when travelling to home, work and school
  • shortening cooking time

With your active participation, we wish this campaign a success in leading Hong Kong towards developing a sustainable community. For more information about this event, please visit http://apps.wwf.org.hk/earthhour/eng/index.html.
