Subject: Support the Hong Kong No Air-con Night

Dear all staff and students,

I am pleased to let you know that PolyU has pledged to support the “Hong Kong No Air-con Night” to be held on 29 September 2010. This meaningful event is organized by Green Sense and is supported by many organizations, companies and all the universities in Hong Kong.

The energy consumption of air-conditioning systems accounts for a great proportion of total energy consumption in Hong Kong. The purpose of this event is to promote energy saving and the green practice of reducing the use of air-conditioning with an aim to reducing the overall greenhouse gas emissions. Participants of this event will undertake to switch off their air-conditioning systems from 7:00 pm on 29 September 2010 to 7:00 am the next morning

To support this event, you are encouraged to take the following actions where appropriate:

(1)   Avoid holding indoor activities on campus on the night of 29 September 2010.

(2)   Remember to switch off air-conditioning when you leave your office, laboratory, workshop or classroom.

(3)   Refrain from using the air-conditioner in your room as far as possible within the period (with your room mate(s)’ prior consent if you are a resident of the Student Halls).

(4)   Refrain from using the air conditioner(s) at your home as far as possible within the period (with your family members’ prior consent).

For more information about this event, please refer to the poster attached or visit the website at For staff or students who may wish to pledge to support this event individually, they can do so on the same website. With your active participation, we wish this event successful in leading Hong Kong towards a low-carbon city. With best regards,

   Y K Kam
