New requirements on import of recyclables affect Hong Kong

Mainland authorities recently announced a plan to tighten requirements on the import of recyclables. This was viewed to be bringing an adverse effect to the local recycling industry. Local recyclers said in early September 2017 that they might need to suspend the collection and processing of waste paper generated locally.

The situation aroused much public concern. Government officials commented that it is an opportunity for the industry to upgrade their operations to meet the new national standards, and to enhance recycling efficiency and the value chain of the local recycling industry. While the Government will follow up on the issue with Mainland authorities and maintain close liaison with the industry and stakeholders, a site in Tuen Mun EcoPark has been reserved by the Government to temporarily store waste paper as some recyclers have suspended operations.
