Tackling palm stearin spill

Due to a collision of two vessels near Hong Kong in August, at least 1,000 tonnes of palm oil stearin was spilled and inundated Hong Kong’s beaches. Hundreds of staff from different Government departments conducted daily beach inspections and cleanups operations to monitor the situation closely. A gradual improvement was observed, and the Government announced the reopening of all 13 affected beaches on 18 August 2017, with 212 tonnes of palm stearin recovered.
