Abstract

Based on two comparable corpora, LCMC and ZCTC, this paper compared the differences in syntactic complexity between translated Chinese and original Chinese, using 14 absolute and relative complexity indices. This study found that: 1) translated Chinese is significantly higher than original Chinese on eight indices and significantly lower than original Chinese on four indices; 2) there is a significant interaction between text type and genre type on eight indices, and the syntactic complexity of different genres in translated Chinese and original Chinese has different performances on seven indices. The findings prove that translated Chinese has the translation universals of both “simplification” and “complication.” The results of this study are explained by comparative analysis, the “hypothesis of gravitational pull” of cognitive translation, and the “horizontal model of translation” of psycholinguistics.
