FCE Academics in Action to Engage Prospective Students

Online Lecture Series
The Greater Bay Area (GBA) from Space:
Daytime vs. Nighttime, and Big Data vs. Small Data

On 7 May 2022, Prof. Qihao Weng represented FCE and gave an inspiring online lecture to prospective Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) students from the Mainland China as part of the PolyU Online Lecture Series organised by Global Engagement Office (GEO). Prof. Weng analysed the urbanisation process in the GBA by comparing big data and small data methods during the one-hour lecture which was well-attended by around 250 participants. Prof. Weng’s lecture gave prospective JEE students a glimpse into FCE’s educational and research excellence.

Faculty Seminar Series - FCE Session

This year, the GEO organised PolyU’s first-ever Faculty Seminar Series targeting secondary students and their parents and teachers. The FCE Session held on 13 May 2022 was kicked off by Prof. Xiang-dong Li, Dean of the Faculty, with an overview of FCE’s structure, strengths and achievements. The Department Heads and delegates then introduced the programmes offered by each department, the new scheme-based admissions, the associated professional accreditation and career prospects. Students, gaining a broader perspective, could be better equipped for their studies and career development. Around 150 participants attended the event.

PolyU Virtual JUPAS Consultation Day 2022: Admissions Strategies
FCE Departmental Programme Scheme Seminars

The Academic Registry (AR) organised a virtual Consultation Day on 21 May 2022 for Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS) students. The four FCE departments each held an individual programme scheme seminar to introduce and share the new scheme-based admissions. Prospective students were walked through the entrance requirements, programme curricula and features, and learning journey of the programmes offered. The online programme scheme seminars of the FCE departments attracted about 300 participants.

CNERC-Steel Received Green Building Award 2021

The Chinese National Engineering Research Centre for Steel Construction (Hong Kong Branch) (CNERC-Steel), together with the Jockey Club Design Institute for Social Innovation, received a Merit Award in Research and Planning Category of the Green Building Award (GBA) 2021, for their cross-disciplinary and cross-institutional project entitled “Expandable housing by Modular Integrated Construction”. The project demonstrates GBA 2021’s theme of “Shaping Liveability • Excellence in Sustainable Built Environment”. The Jury Panel also remarked that the team’s development of the expandable-retractable and reusable Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) system can better cater for different accommodation needs and terrain constraints in Hong Kong, as well as the module size limitation during road transportation and installation.

Inaugurated in 2006, the biennial GBA is jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and the Professional Green Building Council, to recognise outstanding building-related projects and organisations for their contributions to green building practice.

Master of Science in Geomatics (MSc) student Mr Xiu Ming Zhong of Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI) advanced another step closer on his way to the final stage of Huawei ICT Competition 2022 – the Global Final.

Xiu Ming, and his two teammates from the Department of Computing, teamed up to compete in this largest ICT skills contest in the Asia Pacific region, with Dr Yang Xu from LSGI as their instructor. After winning the First Prize in Hong Kong region last December, their team Polynomials competed with other elite students in APAC region and won the Third Prize in Cloud Track. Being the only team from Hong Kong among all finalists, they will represent Hong Kong in the Global Final to be held in June 2022 in Shenzhen.

The Huawei ICT Competition is a competitive ICT talent exchange event that fosters international competition and communication among global college students. The competition equips students with practical skills in applying their ICT knowledge for innovative solutions and nurtures young talents for the ICT industry.
