Summary
The advert of natural language processing technology has opened up new avenues for analyzing linguistic data from diverse and large corpora. In this talk, Dr. Qin will share her recent research progress on using a data-driven approach to analyzing and enhancing language learning among high school EFL learners. The talk is featured with Qin’s recent publications on analyzing structural forms and syntactic functions in writing, modeling individual variability in development, as well as labeling argumentative moves using pretrained language models. Research findings are discussed in relation to the transformative potential of bridging empirical research and classroom practices.

Dr Wenjuan Qin
Fudan University, China
Dr. Wenjuan Qin is an associate professor at Fudan University, College of Foreign Languages and Literature. She earned her Doctoral Degree in human development and education from Harvard University. With academic training in both linguistics and education, Dr. Qin specializes in studying language development among children and adolescents from multilingual and multicultural backgrounds, and in understanding how such development is shaped by home, school, and sociocultural contexts. Her research has been published in prestigious academic journals including Journal of Second Language Writing, Assessing Writing, Journal of Pragmatics, among others. She also serves as an editorial board member of Journal of Second Language Writing, Assessing Writing, Journal of Pragmatics, as well as a peer reviewer of several world-leading journals.
