Summary

About the Opera
In 2025, France and the world celebrate the 150th anniversary of George Bizet’s opera "Carmen", as well as the 180th anniversary of the novel by French author Prosper Mérimée on which it was based. The story of jealously, love, passion and betrayal is universal. The now-iconic tale of the eponymous gypsy seductress and the fatally besotted Don José combines drama that is both metaphorically and literally gut-stabbing with music that is sensuous, hummable and entirely unforgettable. Bizet was convinced it was a failure; he tragically died of a heart attack only a few months later, never to know of the huge success his work would become.
In this special production, we have reset the story in a bar—think of 1970 Hong Kong movies. We have included narration from the original book to trace the story back to its beginning, linking past and present.
