What is Engineering? Through a series of application-oriented workshops, seminars, guest industry speakers. and industrial visit, this subject introduces students to various engineering disciplines.

PolyU Faculty of Engineering has 5 Departments, namely the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and Department of Mechanical Engineering. The subject will consist of various activities, namely:

  • Students will be assigned to group to complete a workshop on engineering application.
  • Seminar to introduce engineering
  • Guest talk on latest industry trends
  • Industry visit.

Through a series of activities, this subject enables students to understand:

  • The features and career development opportunities of various engineering disciplines
  • The responsibilities and accountability of engineering professionals
  • The organisational activities of professional engineering institutions
  • Enthuse students about their high school studies to prepare themselves for an engineering career

Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:

  • Describe the role and impact of engineers in a variety of professional fields in addressing contemporary societal needs at local, national and global levels
  • Identify the qualities and competencies required to become a successful professional engineer and explain why they are important for professional work
  • Reflect on their high school studies and professional development aspirations and develop a personal learning plan for pursuing their career goals in Engineering
