Biomedical Engineering (BME) is an interdisciplinary field that integrates engineering and life sciences to enable engineering innovations for biomedical applications, understand life phenomena and solve technical problems in the biomedical context. BME covers different disciplines of engineering for the purposes of health promotion & protection, health assessment & medical diagnosis, acute medical & surgical interventions, and rehabilitation. This interdisciplinary field requires professionals who understand the health issues and offer the engineering solutions.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering is an interdisciplinary unit of the University to enhance collaborative culture and promote interdisciplinary research and teaching of the University. Currently the BME team is active in four thematic research areas, namely “Medical Imaging and Biosensing”, “Molecular and Cellular Engineering”, “Neuromusculoskeletal Science and Engineering”, and “Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Rehabilitation Engineering”. The team has been playing regional leading role in the areas of Biomechanics, Biomedical Ultrasound, and Rehabilitation Engineering / Prosthetics and Orthotics, and formed a critical mass in molecular and cellular engineering. The team has also established substantial collaborations in research and education with many local, Chinese Mainland, and overseas institutes. Several technologies innovated by the team have been successfully licensed to industry for commercialization.

We believe that our BME Department with inherited interdisciplinary nature will continue to play the role to bridge the innovation and development in engineering / technology and the needs and applications in medical / healthcare fields. Our mission is to train students with solid foundation and practical skills to cater for the growing needs of high quality healthcare services and to conduct innovative and application-oriented research and development through collaborations with different disciplines. Our BME graduates are equipped with solid foundation in both engineering technology and health sciences and they are well prepared for either healthcare sector or medical device industry positions. Alternatively, graduates can choose to pursue careers in the academic or research areas by further study at the Master’s or PhD level.
