Workshop on Architectural Studies

In May, we were delighted to host an inspiring workshop to introduce our new BSc (Hons) in Architectural Studies. Led by Ar Prof. Tris KEE, the programme leader, the event provided secondary school students with an excellent opportunity to explore the fascinating world of architecture. Attendees enjoyed a preview of our curriculum and participated in an interactive architecture game, making the experience both educational and engaging. They demonstrated great passion for architectural studies throughout the workshop. Miss Christy CHOW Awarded HKIE Best Individual Dissertation 2025

Congratulations to Miss Christy CHOW Wai Lam, a final-year student of the BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management programme, on receiving the Best Individual Dissertation Award 2025 from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Building Division)! Christy's winning dissertation, entitled ‘Study on the Efficiency of Project Management of Implementing Terrestrial Laser Scanning in Hong Kong’, was supervised by Prof. WEI Hsi Hsien, Associate Professor of BRE. She was honoured with this award at the HKIE Building Division Annual Dinner 2025 on 8 May. During the event, she received warm congratulations from many attendees, particularly, Prof. Michael YAM, Head of BRE and Prof. Daniel CHAN, her academic advisor and Associate Professor of BRE.

BRE Student & Academic Received Best Presentation Award

  Mr. DU Song, our research student, and Prof. WENG Yiwei, Assistant Professor of BRE have been hououred with the Best Presentation Award at the NSFC-RGC Conference on Frontiers of Digital Twins in Intelligent Manufacturing and Smart Cities, 2025. Their outstanding paper, entitled ‘Autonomous Motion Planning for Mobile Robots in Dynamic and Uncertain Construction Environments’ was recognised for its excellence.   Please join us in congratulating Mr. Du and Prof. Weng on this achievement.

A Big Thank You for CRECCHKI’s Visit

We were honoured to welcome Prof. Charles LAM, Permanent Honorary President, Ms Natasha HO, President, Mr Raymond SOO, Vice President and members of China Real Estate Chamber of Commerce Hong Kong and International Chapter (CRECCHKI) on 22 April 2025. The visit began with a warm welcome and an introduction to the Department by Prof. Michael YAM, Head of BRE. Prof. Daniel CHAN, Programme Leader of the Doctor of International Real Estate and Construction (DIREC), then captivated the guests with an overview of DIREC’s innovative curriculum. In addition, DIREC graduates, Dr Kelvin WONG and Dr Joseph HO shared their learning experiences and how the programme shaped their careers. A highlight of the visit, elaborated by Prof. CHI Hung Lin of BRE, was the opportunity for guests to engage in VR experiences using our CAVE System and Motion Simulator. A big thank you to CRECCHKI for their visit. We hope everyone had an enjoyable time with us. We look forward to hosting another wonderful event with them in the future.

BRE PhD Graduate, Dr Nimesha Sahani JAYASENA, Appointed as Senior Lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University

  Anglia Ruskin University Dr Nimesha Sahani JAYASENA, a BRE PhD Graduate, was appointed as Senior Lecturer in Construction Project Management of the School of Engineering and the Built Environment at Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom in April 2025. Dr Jayasena completed her PhD in December 2022 with a thesis on best practice public-private partnership (PPP) models for smart infrastructure, supervised by Prof. Daniel CHAN, Associate Professor of BRE and Prof. Mohan M. KUMARASWAMY, Honorary Professor at the University of Hong Kong and Honorary Professor at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. She then worked as a Research Associate at BRE. Dr Jayasena’s research focuses on PPP, smart infrastructure, smart cities and village development, New Engineering Contract, retrofitting, and stakeholder management. She has published 11 top-tier journal articles, 10 international conference papers and a book chapter, and has received three outstanding research paper awards

BRE Research Team Won Silver Medal at International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

Congratulations to Dr Roy WANG Dong and the other team members, Dr LI Rongyan, Ms ZOU Zhe, and Mr LI Fangzheng, our research colleagues and students! The passion of Roy, Ronyan, Zhe and Fangzheng for intelligent construction has been recognised with a silver medal at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva, a prestigious annual event to innovation, held in April. Under the guidance of Prof. ZAYED Tarek, Prof. CHI Hung Lin, and Prof. Geoffrey SHEN, the winning project titled ‘Intelligent Construction Site Layout Design Platform’ is the world's first Generative AI-powered tool for optimizing crane and site layouts. This innovative platform streamlines decision-making, offering engineers customizable design options through local software, online platforms, and CAD plugins. By visualizing AI-generated solutions in real-time, it revolutionizes traditional site layout practices, enhancing safety, productivity, and sustainability in the construction industry.

New Executive Committee of BREDAA

The new Executive Committee of the Building and Real Estate Departmental Alumni Association (BREDAA) was successfully elected during the Extraordinary General Meeting last evening. The election was witnessed by a representative from the Alumni Affairs Office of PolyU. The Committee Members include Ir Cr Phyllis CHEN, Sr Carmen LAI, Ir Dr David KWOK, Ir Cr Amy SIU, Mr Marco LEUNG, Sr Fiona LEUNG, Ms Michele LUI, Sr Daniel Ng, Sr Westing TSOI and Cr Dr Angela YUEN. The new Executive Committee will count on the support of all BRE alumni. The BREDAA is dedicated to fostering strong connections among the members.
