Prof Bony Schachter’s new article, “From Regal Way to Political Quietism: Zhu Quan, Disciplinary Communities, and Ming–Qing Daoism”

His new article, From Regal Way to Political Quietism: Zhu Quan, Disciplinary Communities, and Ming–Qing Daoism, is published in Late Imperial China Volume 46, Number 2, December 2025. This article examines the shifting status of Daoism in late imperial China through evolving biographical portrayals of the Ming prince Zhu Quan. It identifies a conflict between "textualist" scholars, who redefined Daoism as a set of ancient philosophical texts, and a "ritualist" community that upheld its ritual and political potency. The analysis unfolds in three parts: analyzing Zhu Quan's own presentation of himself as a divine bureaucrat wielding Daoist-derived regal authority; exploring how late Ming scholars reappraised his life to redefine Daoism as political quietism; and finally, showing Zhu Quan's image as presented in official Qing historiography is the byproduct of this new theoretical synthesis, which did not envision Daoism as having a significant role in Qing politics or the Chinese sacrificial field. This article reveals that knowledge production was a contested field where competing "Daoisms" were weaponized in a fundamental struggle over the nature of kingship and political authority. 何宇軒博士新編《回眸‧新探‧展望：明清才女文化與性別研究》

香港理工大學成功舉辦第三屆理大全港中國歷史論文比賽頒獎典禮

香港，2025年11月22日——香港理工大學中國歷史及文化學系於今日隆重舉行第三屆 「理大全港中國歷史論文比賽」 頒獎典禮，本屆比賽以「海上看歷史、多元的中國和世界」為主題，首次增設「非本地組」，吸引了來自中國內地、越南、馬來西亞、印尼等多地區參賽團隊，較前兩屆規模顯著擴大。 比賽規模與主題創新 本屆比賽參與規模再創新高，本港團隊數量從上屆的103個增至147個，另有29個非本地團隊，參賽人數達近800人。 自2023年首屆舉辦以來，比賽已從最初30多所學校近200位同學參賽，發展為涵蓋全港及海外的學術交流平臺。 比賽主題「海上看歷史、多元的中國和世界」引導學生從海洋視角探索中國與世界歷史的互動關係，參賽作品展現出選題多元化、研究視角國際化的特點。 獲獎論文不僅考據嚴謹、註釋清晰，更能從不同地域和國家歷史脈絡探討多元文化交流，體現了「論從史出、史料互證」的學術精神。 嘉賓致辭：深化歷史教育與文化傳承 香港理工大學中國歷史及文化學系系主任韓孝榮教授在致辭中表示2023年學系開設四年制本科課程，推動中國歷史教育發展。他期望比賽能成為連接院校師生的紐帶，吸引更多優秀學生報讀相關專業。 教育局代表李建寰先生在致辭中介紹了教育局推動歷史教育的舉措：今年正值中國人民抗日戰爭暨世界反法西斯戰爭勝利80周年之際，舉辦了一系列豐富有趣的歷史教育活動，以及將於2027-2028學年實施的高中中國歷史科和歷史科課程優化計劃。 麥勁生教授作為連續三屆參與典禮的嘉賓，分享了歷年論文主題的演變：從第一年關注「物質文明」，到去年「歷史上的中國與世界」，再到今年「海上看歷史，多元的中國與世界」。 他鼓勵學生在歷史研究中培養紮實的學術技藝與辨別能力，強調「在資訊爆炸和人工智慧時代，堅持辨別史料真偽、記載可信性和論述說服力」的重要性。 吳志華博士從文化傳播角度提出建議：應提升中國文化內容品質，善用AI等數據技術，進行跨學科研究，關注多元文化對話。 香港地方誌中心副總編輯劉蜀永教授表示，雖因香港修志工程繁忙，但因活動意義重大而特地出席。他肯定了比賽從最初僅限香港擴展至中國內地及東南亞地區的成長歷程，期待比賽能持續舉辦，讓更多青年通過了解中國歷史，更加了解和熱愛國家，為香港、國家發展和中華民族偉大復興貢獻力量。  本港冠軍隊伍採訪 冠軍隊伍宣道中學同學表示：「透過訪問羅老，我們了解到港九大隊不僅在本地抗日，更與盟軍合作，在國際反法西斯戰爭中發揮重要作用。這些歷史往往被忽略，我們希望透過論文，讓更多人認識本地抗戰戰士的貢獻，毋忘前人的犧牲與付出。」 指導老師廖智樑指出：「我校中史科組推動探究式學習，鼓勵同學親自尋訪、記錄、整理這些被時光掩埋的歷史聲音。透過這個過程，同學不僅能重構過去的樣貌，更能內化『論從史出』的史學方法——學會提問、蒐證、辨析，最終形成有根據、有見地的歷史論述。這是歷史學習的真諦。」 活動意義與未來展望 本屆頒獎典禮不僅是對優秀歷史研究的表彰，更是推動歷史教育與文化傳承的重要平臺。在致辭環節，與會嘉賓一致強調，歷史教育應培養學生的多元視野、獨立思辨能力與家國情懷。 香港理工大學表示，將延續舉辦這一賽事，進一步擴大參與範圍，深化與內地及海外中學的合作，持續推動中國歷史文化教育的發展，培養兼具國際視野與家國情懷的未來人才。 當日下午，港理工中國歷史及文化學系亦舉辦了「人工智慧與數碼科技：香港中國歷史教育的機遇與挑戰」論壇。 論壇聚集本港科技業界專家、中學教師及大學學者共聚一堂，分享經驗、交流見解，探討人工智慧與數碼工具於歷史教與學中的實踐與前景。

第二屆青藏高原「文化共生與民族交融」學術研討會於香港成功舉辦

        2025年11月7日至8日，由香港理工大學中國歷史及文化學系、中國歷史及文化研究中心，四川大學築牢中華民族共同體意識研究基地、中國藏學研究所聯合主辦的第二屆青藏高原「文化共生與民族交融」學術研討會，在香港理工大學順利召開。本次研討會彙集了來自四川大學、中國社會科學院、中央民族大學、台灣「中研院」、台北故宮博物院、台灣中正大學和香港理工大學兩岸三地多所高校及科研機構的二十多位專家學者，涵蓋藏學、歷史學、人類學、民族學、邊疆政治、地理及生態環境研究等多個學科領域。         在兩天的會議中，學者們圍繞著「邊疆地區的信仰與互動」、「藏學與中華民族共同體理論」、「生態保護與生計轉型」、「邊疆歷史地理與社會變遷」、「近代以來的高原經濟與發展」等多個專題展開深入對話。會場討論熱烈，學術氛圍濃厚，展現出跨學科區域研究的學術活力。         11月8日，研討會在香港理工大學韓孝榮教授與四川大學李錦教授的總結發言後圓滿落幕。本次研討會是兩校在青藏高原研究領域的再度合作，不僅為相關學者提供了寶貴的交流平台，更深化了對青藏高原多元文化共生與民族交融歷程的理解。

Release of Dr. Chen Bin's New Book, Hui Muslims in the Shaping of Modern China: Education, Frontier Politics, and Nation-State

Dr. Bin CHEN’s new book, Hui Muslims in the Shaping of Modern China: Education, Frontier Politics, and Nation-State, has been published by Routledge.   This study draws on archival sources and newspapers to examine the Chinese Nationalist government's distinctive support for private Muslim teachers schools between the 1920s and 1940s, exploring the complex relationship between these institutions and the Chinese state during the Republican period.   In 1933, the government issued the Teachers Schools Regulations, mandating that all teachers schools be state-run. However, the Nationalists viewed private Muslim teachers schools as valuable allies in their efforts to assert influence in China’s Muslim-dominated northwestern frontier region and deliberately refrained from enforcing the 1933 Teachers Schools Regulations on them. Instead, the government applied the 1933 Amended Private Schools Regulations, which did not specifically address teachers schools, to govern Muslim teachers schools. By charting the evolving dynamics between the Nationalist state and Chinese Hui Muslims, this book reevaluates the Hui Muslims’ role in shaping modern China.   Offering crucial context on the role of Islam in modern China, this book is a valuable resource for scholars and students of Chinese history, as well as for policymakers and journalists interested in religion in China.   Bin CHEN is a Research Assistant Professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He received his PhD from Pennsylvania State University, and his research interests include China’s modern transition and religion in China. His publications have appeared in The Journal of Asian Studies, Journal of Modern Chinese History, International Journal of Asian Studies, Anhui shixue, and others.

Outstanding Alumni Award of PolyU CHC 2025 Dr LEE Yiu-fai (Yee Kok), MH Abbot of Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple Master of Arts in Chinese Culture (2012)   Dr. Lee Yiu-fai joined the charitable organization Sik Sik Yuen in 1985 and has been serving in a voluntary capacity ever since, holding multiple positions on its Board of Directors. He served as Chairman from 2007 to 2011 and has been elected as the Abbot of Wong Tai Sin Temple since 2006. Throughout his tenure, Dr. Lee has dedicated himself to promoting virtuous conduct, disseminating moral teachings, advancing education, providing medical assistance, and supporting elderly care—all guided by the compassionate and benevolent teachings of Wong Tai Sin. Each year, these efforts directly benefit over 100,000 individuals.   Dr. Lee has also been instrumental in promoting cultural heritage and the preservation of traditional practices. In 2014, he successfully applied to the State Council to have the Wong Tai Sin Belief and Customs recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage, significantly elevating its cultural status. Furthermore, Dr. Lee proposed and helped design the "Wong Tai Sin Belief and Customs Cultural Centre," aimed at preserving and promoting this valuable cultural legacy across all segments of society.   In 2025, Dr. Lee was selected as a Representative Inheritor in the Sixth Batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage, a recognition that underscores his profound contributions to cultural preservation and transmission.

Call for Nomination — 2025 Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award for CHC

The 2025 Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award for the Department of Chinese History and Culture (CHC) is now open for nomination.   The Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award aims to give recognition to distinguished graduates of PolyU for great distinction in their chosen fields, active support to their alma mater, as well as impactful contributions to the wider community. The nominated candidate must be a graduate who has successfully completed a full-time or part-time programme offered by CHC. 2025 YZU & PolyU 中華文化論壇成功舉辦

2025年5月9日，香港理工大學（PolyU）中國歷史及文化學系與台灣元智大學（YZU）中國語文學系再度攜手，成功舉辦「2025 YZU & PolyU中華文化論壇」。此次論壇延續兩校合作傳統，進一步深化港台學術交流，促進中華文化的傳承與創新。 論壇開幕式上，香港理工大學中國歷史及文化學系系主任韓孝榮教授通過線上方式發表致辭，強調兩校在推動人文與科技融合發展上的共同願景，並對未來合作寄予厚望。活動期間，兩校師生圍繞中華文化的多元議題展開深入研討，涵蓋歷史、文學、藝術等多個領域，展現了青年學子的學術潛力與批判思維。 在歷史脈絡方面，兩校師生探討了中越邊境語言變遷，信息技術與民國回民齋月活動的關係，明代朝貢制度等政治與社會變遷如何影響文化發展；在宗教哲學領域，聚焦一貫道教義、朱子氣論、玄學與唐賦的政治隱喻等思想交融議題；文學藝術部分則透過知青文學創傷分析、中國武術當代轉型、《雪溪圖》研究、京劇名伶田際雲研究等探討傳統文化的新詮釋；性別與族群研究則涉及漢代女性社會角色、唐宋女性財產權、原民信仰傳說等文化實踐議題。與會者透過多元學術視角，不僅展現中華文化的豐富內涵，更開拓了人文與科技融合的創新研究方向，為文化傳承注入新活力。 為⿎勵學⽣研究表現，主辦單位特別評選出四篇優秀學⽣論⽂並予以表揚。香港理工大學中國歷史及文化學系的任聰、李昊洋、鄧兆遠、曾曉彤四位同學憑藉出色的研究成果脫穎而出，獲得表彰。此外，論壇結束後，與會師生共同參訪台灣中壢地區的文化景點，通過實地考察，加深了大家的友誼。 此次論壇不僅鞏固了兩校的合作基礎，也為未來更多跨領域交流奠定了堅實的框架。
