Use of FRP and Seawater Sea-Sand Concrete for Precast Pier Slabs

Precast pier slabs demonstrating the use of FRP and seawater sea-sand concrete (SSC) were completed in December 2025 in Lai Chi Chong, Hong Kong.

This demonstration project focused on precast slabs utilizing developed FRP-SSC technologies. Four distinct slab types were precast and installed at the pier for comparative performance monitoring, i.e., an SSC slab reinforced with GFRP bars, a normal concrete slab reinforced with GFRP bars, a conventional steel-reinforced concrete slab, and a steel-reinforced slab incorporating FRP mesh for crack control.
