The objectives of this subject are (i) to introduce to students the concept and practice of service-learning; and (ii) to allow students to understand the tension between the ethno-cultural preservation and the economic difficulties caused by contemporary China’s development, and to raise their awareness of minority cultural values and the danger of its extinction.

The objectives of this subject are (i) to introduce to students the concept and practice of service-learning; (ii) to raise students’ awareness of social issues in Hong Kong and educate them on the challenges and children with special learning needs in Hong Kong; and (iii) to introduce students to the use of language arts as a more integrated way of learning the language through listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and visually representing with a focus on speech, recitation, gaming and creative writing.

The objectives of this subject are to:

  1. Introduce to students the concept and practice of service learning;
  2. Raise students’awareness of social issues in Hong Kong and educate them on the challenges and children with special learning needs in Hong Kong;
  3. Introduce students to the use of language arts as a more integrated way of learning the language through listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and visually representing with a focus on speech, recitation, gaming and creative writing;
  4. Enhance students’sensitivity and awareness of the roles and functions of language in addressing the different needs of people from various domains;
  5. Enhance students’generic competencies of innovative problem solving, communication and teamwork;
  6. Nurture students’sense of social awareness, responsibility and engagement.

Preserving Cultural Heritage for Ethnic Minorities in Contemporary Asia

The objectives of this subject are to:

  1. Introduce to students the concept and practice of service-learning
  2. Allow students to understand the tension between the ethnic cultural preservation and the economic difficulties caused by contemporary Asia’s development; raise their awareness of minority cultural values and the danger of its extinction
  3. Educate students on anthropological fieldwork and assist the community to record its oral history specifically around the
  4. Elderly, about its traditional wisdom and cultural heritage as well as its struggle to maintain ethnic human dignity in the face of abject poverty
  5. Nurture students’ sense of social justice, generic social responsibility and lifelong engagement
  6. To cultivate a sense of empathy among the students towards ethnic minorities and the difficulties in livelihood caused my marginalization, as a result of urbanization and economic development of modern societies.

From Visuality to Vocality: Audio Description in Practice

 This subject aims at:

  1. introducing to students the concept and practice of service-learning;
  2. raising students’ awareness of social issues in Hong Kong such as the rights of the disabled;
  3. cultivating students’ consciousness of the needs and challenges faced by the disabled such as the visually impaired;
  4. shaping students’ ability to reflect on the attributes and privileges of oneself and empathize with others who are very different;
  5. fostering students’ ability to communicate effectively with peers in teamwork as well as with others who are from very different backgrounds such as the visually impaired;
  6. encouraging students to apply learning in sharing with the less fortunate or those in need and serving the community and providing students with opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in real life situation;
  7. cultivating in students the ability of critically appreciate art and culture;
  8. training students in live audio description skills in situ which requires preparation as well as versatility, thus developing students’ability of innovative problem-solving in real situation;
  9. enhancing students’sensitivities and competencies in using language to address the needs of the visually impaired.

Service-Learning through helping primary students with specific reading difficulties

The objectives of this subject are (i) to introduce students to the concept and practice of service learning; (ii) to provide students with a general overview of the key theories related to specific reading difficulties (developmental dyslexia); and (iii) to provide students with hands-on experience in implementing a well-designed and theory-driven educational programme to primary students with reading difficulties, in collaboration with professional speech therapists and social workers.
