Minor in Japanese

The curriculum consists of 16 subjects in two broad fields: (1) Japanese language, and (2) Japanese culture and communication. All subjects of this programme carry three academic credits. To qualify for the award of Minor in Japanese, students are required to accumulate 18 credits by completing six subjects of which at least three subjects are level-3 or above subjects.

East Asian countries, in particular Japan, Korea, and China, have influenced one another in various aspects throughout history and have formed a cultural community. This subject aims to introduce major social and cultural phenomena of Japan, Korea, and China, and to help students better understand each country’s society and culture and integrate them into one community as East Asia.

Understanding Japan: A Journey into Japanese Culture and Society

The subject introduces a wealth of Japanese people’s culture and society, including Japanese aesthetics, traditional clothing, martial arts, Zen philosophy, tea ceremony and seafood cuisine, as well as contemporary visual and youth culture (J-pop), including manga comics, anime, games, technology and social media. We will examine the social structure of Japan and the socio-cultural issues faced by the changing Japanese society.

^ Students can apply for counting the WIE, if carried out in Japan, as an elective for fulfilling the credit requirements.  Completed application form AS147(a) should be submitted to the Minor-offering department (Minor Department) for approval and no later than your applying for graduation.

In addition:

  • Only credit-bearing WIE (with a subject code) will be accepted.
  • The WIE duration should be a minimum of 60 working hours.
  • Only students who have already passed the WIE and meet all the specified criteria can apply for the counting of WIE as an elective subject of the Minor.
  • Maximum one WIE can be counted towards the Minor.
  • A maximum of 3 WIE credits will be counted towards the Minor.
  • The Minor will follow the WIE level indicated by the Major department.
  • The grade of WIE (regardless whether it is a Merit /Pass/Fail or a letter grade) would not be counted towards the calculation of the Minor GPA, despite the double-counting of the credits.
