Bio Note

Professor SD Chan has been involved in different committee works of the Education Bureau for more than 20 years. She was heavily involved in the Chinese language and Putonghua curriculum development for the HK school sector, and has been commissioned over 30 professional service / R&D projects by the EDB since 1999, with a cumulative consultancy fee exceeding HK$10M. These projects cover areas such as teachers’ training, curriculum evaluation, school-based support for Chinese L2 teaching, development of Chinese L2 curriculum for non-native speaking students at different levels. An array of basic research have been conducted with an aim of developing a progressive framework in the learning of the Chinese language by NCS students. Within PolyU, she played a key role in he development of a Putonghua proficiency test (the Putonghua Shuiping Kaoshi, in short PSK) which was pegged to the national Putonghua test as validated by the State Language Commission back in 2003.


In July 2015, Prof. SD Chan was awarded the Medal of Honour by the HKSAR government for her valuable contribution made to the HK education sector, especially on language education and research.
