Officials of Education Bureau visit the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies

Deputy Secretary for Education Ms. Louise SO (sixth from right), Principal Assistant Secretary (Special Education) Ms. Mandy HO (fifth from right) and five other officials of Education Bureau visited CBS on 14 February. Prof. Ping LI (third from left) and Dr. Cindy NGAI (second from the right) introduced the Speech and Language Sciences Laboratory to the guests.

Our EDB guests were introduced to the use of virtual reality (VR) in language acquisition research at the Brain, Language, and Computation Lab.

After the visit of the Brain, Language, and Computation Lab, the EDB guests visited the Speech Therapy Unit (STU) to understand how technologies can be used in speech and hearing sciences and their application value in education and clinical settings. They were received by CBS speech therapy teaching team, including Clinical Education Director Dr. Man Tak LEUNG (third from left), Programme Leader of Master of Speech Therapy (MST) Dr. Dustin LAU (second from left), Deputy Programme Leader of MST Dr. Angel CHAN (fifth from left), STU Director Dr. Janet NG (second from right), Assistant Professors Dr. Si CHEN (fourth from left) and Dr. Min Ney WONG (first from right), and Research Assistant Professor Dr. Winsy WONG (first from left).

Accompanied by Prof. Ping LI (first from left), our guests visited UBSN and were briefed on the use of 3T MRI Scanner in neurocognitive research.


Led by Deputy Secretary for Education Ms. Louise SO, seven officials from the Professional Development and Special Education Branch of Education Bureau (EDB) visited the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies (CBS) on 14 February 2023 to understand how technologies are utilized in applied language sciences research, and their application values in the education sector.

After the opening remarks by Prof. Ping LI, Dean of Faculty of Humanities and Dr. Cindy NGAI, Associate Head of CBS, CBS researchers introduced the equipment in the Speech and Language Sciences Laboratory to the guests, including a social robot for speech training for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) system for speech and language intervention, and an electroencephalography (EEG) system to address issues in second language acquisition. The guests then visited three more facilities at PolyU, namely the Brain, Language, and Computation Lab, the Speech Therapy Unit (STU), and the University Research Facility in Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience (UBSN). We look forward to further collaborations with the Professional Development and Special Education Branch of EDB on the educational and clinical applications of the research findings in the future.
