Aims of Academic Advising

Academic advising at PolyU aims to help students to make informed and intelligent academic decisions/choices about their study at PolyU that suit their intellectual, professional and personal goals. It is instrumental in promoting student success, and plays a vital role in students’ holistic development at PolyU. The specific objectives are:

  • To build up an early connection between the students and the University, and to promote their sense of affiliation to the Faculties/Departments/Schools, and the University;
  • To provide students with accurate information about the academic regulations and requirements regarding their Major/programme, and the General University Requirements (GUR);
  • To assist students to explore their interests, abilities and values on academic pursuits, and formulate appropriate intellectual, professional and personal goals;
  • To provide advice and guidance to students that enable them to develop and pursue a study plan for their 4 years of study appropriate for meeting their professional and personal goals at PolyU; and
  • To connect students to resources, opportunities and support within and outside the University to enhance their educational experiences and success.

The Designated Academic Advisors will assist you with all matters related to academic requirements and studies leading to the award of a Major, Secondary Major, Minor, or fast-track programme, if applicable. This includes:

  • Building rapport with the students, serving as a bridge that connects them to the department;
  • Being accessible and available to students, and responding to their questions and concerns;
  • Helping students to consider and clarify their intellectual, professional and personal goals;
  • Helping students to develop an appropriate study plan and assisting in their selection of appropriate courses in their major study and GUR so as to achieve their identified goals and holistic development;
  • Helping students to understand academic regulations and requirements; and
  • Identifying students with special learning needs or early signs of learning problems, and referring/encouraging them to seek help or support.
Each Full-time undergraduate student in the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering and BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering (senior year) programmes will be assigned to one of the full-time academic staff as your academic advisor throughout your course of study at The Department of Building Environment and Energy Engineering (BEEE), PolyU.
  • Students are required to attend at least one academic advising meeting with their Designated Academic Advisor each semester, totaling a minimum of two meetings per year.
  • The Designated Academic Advisor is available to answer enquiries via email and provide clinical consultations to students by individual appointment during times outside of the scheduled meetings as needed.

  • Academic advising will be provided to students through regular face-to-face meetings and clinical consultation sessions. The meetings can be conducted either individually, in small groups, or in other alternative formats at the discretion of the Designated Academic Advisor.
  • To assist students in identifying their study patterns and goals, you are required to complete the Session Log Sheet for each academic advising meeting. The completed log sheet must be returned to your Designated Academic Advisor for signature within 7 days after the meeting for record-keeping and any necessary follow-up actions.

Each student will be informed of their Designated Academic Advisor as soon as they are registered in the BEng (Hons) in Building Sciences and Engineering programme (including senior year students). After that, you will:

  • meet with your Designated Academic Advisor in semester one before the end of the add/drop period to discuss your academic major and subject selection.
  • consult the BEEE Undergraduate Secretary, when needs arise, on issues related to academic requirements and regulations to the programme.
