Biography

Dr LAM is a registered social worker and a certified philosophical counsellor, currently serving as a Lecturer in the Department of Applied Social Sciences.  Before joining the PolyU, he had accumulated a decade of professional experience as a social work practitioner in frontline, supervisory and managerial positions, and as a fieldwork placement supervisor in various higher education institutions.

Through his work with non-refoulement claimants and refugees, Dr LAM has amassed significant counselling and casework experiences that involve individuals and families from a multitude of cultural backgrounds. His casework encompasses a broad spectrum of issues, including parenting, relationship problems, domestic violence, child maltreatment, substance abuse, medical issues, end-of-life care, and mental health challenges.

Dr LAM’s academic and practical pursuits are deeply influenced by phenomenology and existential philosophy. He places significant emphasis on existential themes in his casework, supervision and teaching, including the uniqueness of the person, meanings and resilience in suffering, the freedom of choice, and commitment to authenticity.  He aspires to promote the application of phenomenology and existentialism within the realm of helping professions.
