Professor Ni is a world-renowned scholar in the fields of structural health monitoring and vibration control. He was ranked in the World’s Top 2% Most-Cited Scientists in Civil Engineering in rankings released by Stanford University in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and, most recently, 2024 (in both the career-long and single year citation categories). Professor Ni currently serves as: Co-Editor-in-Chief of (i) the Journal of Infrastructure Intelligence and Resilience (Publisher: Elsevier) and (ii) Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure (Publisher: Oxford University Press); Associate Editor of (i) the Journal of Civil Structural Health Monitoring (Publisher: Springer) and (ii) the Journal of Vibration and Control (Publisher: SAGE Publications); Advisory Board Member of (i) Structural Control and Health Monitoring (Publisher: Wiley) and (ii) the Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing and Special Equipment (Publisher: Emerald Publishing); and Editorial Board Member of eight journals including Engineering Structures (Publisher: Elsevier), Advances in Structural Engineering (Publisher: SAGE Publications), Smart Structures and Systems (Publisher: Techno-Press), and Transportation Safety and Environment (Publisher: Oxford University Press).
Professor Ni is an active researcher, practitioner and promoter in the field of Structural Health Monitoring. He received the 2017 “Structural Health Monitoring Person-of-the-Year” Award granted by the international journal Structural Health Monitoring (the top journal in the field). He is a recipient of: (i) the State Scientific and Technological Progress Award (Second Class), China (2016); (ii) the Science and Technology Award (First Class) of the Guangdong Provincial Government, China (2014); (iii) the Science and Technology Award (Second Class) of the Zhejiang Provincial Government, China (2021); (iv) the Science and Technology Award (Third Class) of the Shanghai Municipal Government, China (2013); (v) the Science and Technology Award (First Class) of the China Highway and Transportation Society (2021); (vi) the Science and Technology Award (First Class) of the Chinese Society for Vibration Engineering, China (2022); (vii) the Science and Technology Award (Second Class) of the Chinese Society for Vibration Engineering, China (2020); (viii) a Gold Medal and Grand Prize at the 37th International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products in Geneva (2009); and (ix) a Gold Medal and Grand Prize at the 41st International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products in Geneva (2013). In 2010 and 2024, Professor Ni received The Hong Kong Polytechnic University President’s Award for Outstanding Achievement (Research and Scholarly Activities). He has successfully supervised 33 Ph.D. students and has filed 25 Chinese, US, Japanese, Korean and German patents.
