Professor Chen has published over 340 peer reviewed research articles, many of which were published in top-tier journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Signal Transduction and Targeted Therapy, The Lancet Microbe, Nature Microbiology, Science Advance, Nature Communications, Drug Resistance Updates, ACS Central Science, and Trends in Microbiology. His accomplishments have earned him various accolades, including being made a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and being ranked among the World’s Top 2% most highly cited scientists (2021, 2022, 2023) in the index compiled by Stanford University. As a project leader, Professor Chen has received major research grants in recent years with funding totaling over HK$100 million, including from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council Theme-based Research Scheme, Research Impact Fund and Collaborative Research Fund, together with funding from “973”, the “13th Five-Year Plan” National Key Research and Development Programme, Guangdong Major Key Project of Applied and Basic Applied Research and Shenzhen Key Laboratory in mainland China.
Professor Chen’s current research includes focus on bacterial antimicrobial resistance, virulence and tolerance in the fields of veterinary, and food and medical microbiology. His research lies on the interface of clinical study and basic science with the ultimate goal of developing novel therapies to combat bacterial antimicrobial resistance. In addition to his research accomplishments, Professor Chen actively contributes to professional communities. He has been granted six US patents and ten China patents and written two book chapters. Professor Chen also serves as an Associate Editor for the journal Microbiological Research, and Ad Hoc Reviewer for high-impact journals such as The Lancet Infectious Diseases, Nature Microbiology, The Lancet Global Health and EbioMedicine.
