Dean's Message

Faculty of Humanities (FH) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the youngest faculties of humanities in Hong Kong and full of energy in creating synergies among language, culture, and science in education and research.

In line with the role and mission of our University, our Faculty is an application-oriented faculty in the broader sense of the term. It is one place for the student to learn and to develop, for the teacher to transmit knowledge and to contribute to scholarship. It is where you find people learn to care about people and serve society.

Our efforts are fast gaining international recognition. PolyU’s Arts and Humanities is ranked 89th in the world, and 13th in Asia 1. In the subject of Linguistics, the discipline in which a majority of FH staff members are engaged, we are ranked 48th in the world 2.

Gaining strength in areas such as speech therapy and health communication, FH is emerging as a leader in tertiary education in the fields of applied language sciences, Chinese-English bilingual studies, and bilingual China studies in Asia Pacific and the world. Our programmes equip students with knowledge and practical application abilities essential in a wide range of professions.

The Faculty also serves all PolyU students taking language and general education subjects. All six units in the Faculty work to help our students to enhance their language competence in both English and Chinese, and to develop skills in extensive reading, writing, speaking, and critical thinking. The Confucius Institute of Hong Kong under the Faculty also offers a wide range of scholarly and cultural activities.
