PolyU and Huizhou Daya Bay sign a cooperation agreement to establish joint technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Huizhou Municipal Government, together with the Daya Bay Economic and Technological Development Zone (Daya Bay Development Zone), have entered into a cooperation agreement for the joint establishment of the PolyU-Daya Bay Technology and Innovation Research Institute with a signing ceremony held on campus on 13 May. Professor Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, introduced the University’s latest developments and its strategic goals for future expansion in mainland China to the visiting Huizhou delegation. He added that PolyU is committed to promoting technology and innovation, and nurturing research talents. Its unique strengths in fundamental and applied research, innovation and entrepreneurship have enabled it to make a significant contribution to the high-quality development of the country. Leveraging PolyU and Huizhou’s advantages and coordinated development, the two parties will jointly establish the Research Institute to deepen their cooperation and further the translation of research outcomes, providing core technology for local industry. The Research Institute will serve as a driving force for the development of the technology industry in Huizhou, thus achieving mutual benefits for all parties. Mr LIU Ji, Secretary of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal People’s Congress, stated that PolyU possesses first-class innovative talents and strong research capabilities, while Huizhou has a solid modern industrial foundation and broad scenarios for innovation application. The joint establishment of the Research Institute will definitely promote complementary advantages. With a focus on Huizhou’s industrial development, the Research Institute will fully capitalise on PolyU’s talent and research strengths to encourage further incubation and commercialisation of research outcomes in Huizhou, so as to accelerate its contribution to the further growth of Guangdong’s development. The Research Institute will also integrate high-end science and technology innovation resources from the region and abroad to cultivate high-calibre engineers, and innovative and entrepreneurial talents with mastery of key future technologies, to develop the Research Institute into a world-class technology and innovation platform. Witnessed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, President of PolyU; Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost of PolyU; Mr LIU Ji, Secretary of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal People’s Congress; Mr LAI Jianhua, Member of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Head of the United Front Work Department; and Mr LI Ming, Member of the Standing Committee of the Huizhou Municipal Committee and Head of the Organisation Department, the cooperation agreement was signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU; Ms LI Junling, Vice Mayor of the Huizhou Municipal Government; and Mr GUO Wupiao, Chairman of the Party Working Committee and Director of the Management Committee of the Daya Bay Development Zone. Other guests included representatives from PolyU and the Huizhou Municipal Government and enterprises. Technological innovation has become a key driver of social development. At the event, Prof. ZHENG Zijian, Chair Professor of Soft Materials and Devices of PolyU, introduced the Research Institute’s development plan. The Research Institute will focus on the fields of petrochemicals, new energy materials, artificial intelligence, and smart manufacturing. Through cooperation with Huizhou and the Daya Bay Development Zone, it will fully leverage the advantages of all parties and implement an innovation-driven development strategy to actively promote industry-university-research collaboration, making contributions to the technological innovation of Hong Kong, Huizhou and the Nation, and creating a new model of government-university collaboration.

PolyU signs a collaborative agreement with Guangdong University of Technology to nurture talents in entrepreneurship and innovation

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Guangdong University of Technology (GDUT) have reached an agreement to jointly cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial talents. Together, they have launched the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Immersive Experience Project” which promotes talent exchange and the implementation of entrepreneurial cooperation projects through a credit system, creating a high-quality talent ecosystem for innovation and technology. The collaboration agreement signing ceremony was held at the Innovation Valley of GUDT, a national innovation and entrepreneurship education practice base. The Ceremony was witnessed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation); Mr Kelvin WONG, Director of the Knowledge Transfer and Entrepreneurship Office; Prof. HU Qintai, Secretary of the Party Committee of GDUT; Prof. WANG Zhenyou, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President; and Mr ZHANG Xueli, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice school-level cadre. The Agreement was signed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Prof. QIU Xueqing, President of GDUT. Dr Lam Tai-fai stated, “We believe the cooperation between the two parties can effectively leverage the strengths of both schools and contribute to the further development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area into a world-class bay area. PolyU has established a complete entrepreneurial training ecosystem and the subject ‘Innovation and Entrepreneurship’ has become a compulsory course for undergraduate students. After the launch of this cooperative project, the two schools will pursue comprehensive cooperation, including establishing a service consultation hub for innovation and entrepreneurship talents in both institutions, co-organising international exchange activities, promoting implementation of entrepreneurial cooperation projects for students from both schools and jointly cultivating high-quality innovative and entrepreneurial talents in various fields.” Prof. Hu Qintai expressed the view that, “Cross-border cooperation in talent cultivation is important for both universities to anchor the strategic positioning of ‘one point, two locations’ in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, to serve and integrate into the development of the Greater Bay Area, and to promote the high-quality development of both schools. GDUT will work with PolyU to jointly create a new benchmark for the integrated development of a modernised bay area with Chinese characteristics, cultivate top innovative talents, help the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area become a world-class talent hub, promote student exchanges between the two institutions, and provide opportunities for young people in Guangdong and Hong Kong to contribute to the dawning of the era.” PolyU and GDUT will embark on comprehensive cooperation, utilising the innovative and entrepreneurial teaching resources, professional talents and social networks of both universities to achieve effective resource sharing. With the strong support of our country and its close connection to the world, the two schools will promote collaborative development for the training of innovative and entrepreneurial talents, while also encouraging students from both schools to conceive and start entrepreneurial projects and then incubate them to take root in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.

PolyU and Ganzhou sign strategic collaborative framework agreements to deepen research collaboration between Hong Kong and Ganzhou

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has partnered with Ganzhou Municipal Government and Xingguo County Government in Jiangxi province to capitalise on their strengthens and promote the high-quality development of the textile industry in Ganzhou and Hong Kong. Prof. Christopher CHAO, PolyU Vice President (Research and Innovation), led a delegation to participate in the “1st China (Ganzhou) Graphene cum Textile and Apparel and New Materials Industry Forum” on 19 March in Xingguo County, Ganzhou. At the event, Prof. Chao signed strategic collaborative framework agreement separately with Mr DOU Liangtan, Member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Ganzhou Municipal Committee and Vice Mayor of Ganzhou, and Mr LIU Zhanghong, Deputy Secretary of Xingguo County Party Committee and County Mayor of Xingguo, for the joint establishment of the PolyU-Xingguo Textiles Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Institute) to promote in-depth and effective industry-university-research collaboration. The Institute will support the innovative development of the textile industry in Ganzhou and its counties, while creating further opportunities for PolyU in terms of education, research and translation of research into innovative outcomes in the field of textiles. Prof. Christopher Chao said, “By putting efforts into brand building, technology promotion, professional training and talent development, PolyU will make contributions to the advancement of the textile industry and market in Ganzhou and Xingguo County. The solicitation of business and projects will also facilitate investment and further collaborative opportunities. We will both fully leverage our respective strengths and join forces to create a new chapter in the textile industry.” PolyU possesses strong educational and research capabilities in the textiles field, which align with the development needs of Ganzhou’s textile industry in the areas of talent cultivation, research, industrial transformation and upgrading. The collaboration between PolyU, Ganzhou and Xingguo County and the establishment of the Institute will leverage the University’s expertise in talent, technology and research platforms, to support the enduring growth of local textile enterprises. The forum themed on “New Weave of New Graphene” gathered experts from universities, enterprises and industry in the fields of graphene and textiles from all over the country, to discuss research and industrial applications of graphene (also known as the King of New Materials). Dr Shou Dahua, Assistant Professor and Limin Endowed Young Scholar in Advanced Textiles Technologies of PolyU School of Fashion and Textiles introduced his research achievements in textiles and new materials at the Forum. On the same day, the country’s first Graphene Technology Museum was inaugurated in Xingguo County, to serve as a national hub for graphene innovation to translate research outcomes into new productive forces.

PolyU partners with Yangjiang Offshore Wind Energy Laboratory to establish joint research centre to drive development of offshore wind power technology

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and Yangjiang Offshore Wind Energy Laboratory (the Laboratory) signed an agreement to jointly establish the PolyU-Yangjiang Laboratory Joint Research Centre for Offshore Wind Power (JRC). The JRC will be operated and managed jointly by the PolyU Research Institute for Land and Space (RILS) and the Laboratory, signifying an increasingly close research collaboration between the two organisations in offshore wind power technology. Under the new partnership, PolyU and Yangjiang researchers will share resources and laboratory facilities, and join force in research projects on new technologies and materials for offshore wind power applications, as well as translating the research outcomes into practical solutions for industry. The JRC signing ceremony was held on the PolyU campus and attended by a delegation from Yangjiang in Guangdong province together with PolyU representatives. Distinguished guests included Prof. Christopher CHAO, PolyU Vice President (Research and Innovation); Mr LIU Dewei, Vice Mayor of Yangjiang Municipal People’s Government; Prof. DONG Cheng, PolyU Associate Vice President (Mainland Research Advancement); Prof. CHEN Qingyan, Director of the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research (PAIR); Prof. DING Xiaoli, Director of RILS; Mr MO Jiaqiang, Deputy Director of Yangjiang Science and Technology Bureau; Mr LIN Tao, Deputy Director of Yangjiang Development and Reform Bureau, and Prof. ZHU Ronghua, Director of Yangjiang Offshore Wind Energy Laboratory. In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Christopher Chao said, “Wind power has emerged as a pivotal strategy for many countries to achieve carbon neutrality. The collaboration between PolyU and Yangjiang Offshore Wind Energy Laboratory not only propels the advancement of offshore wind power knowhow, but also fortifies a mutual engagement in research, talent development and knowledge exchange. The JRC will amalgamate the research capabilities and expertise of both organisations to address major scientific challenges and surmount technical barriers in the energy field. This, in turn, will support the development of a world-class research and innovation powerhouse for wind power industry and clean energy.” The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department of the HKSAR Government has estimated that wind power could satisfy approximately one-third of Hong Kong’s electricity demand if the City’s offshore wind energy reaches 10.7 billion kilowatts. The construction of offshore wind turbines often involves technical challenges in engineering design and construction. The collaboration between PolyU and the Laboratory will facilitate interdisciplinary research and the development of practical engineering solutions to benefit Hong Kong, the Nation, and the world in the construction of offshore wind farms. The Laboratory brings together top experts from mainland universities, including Zhejiang University, Sun Yat-sen University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, South China University of Technology, Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Guangdong Ocean University and Hebei University of Engineering, to conduct research on fundamental science, as well as applied and core technology in the field of offshore wind power. Established in 2021, RILS is one of PAIR’s 18 constituent research institutes and research centres with over 50 PolyU scholars from different disciplines specialising in interdisciplinary research and knowledge transfer across five major areas: land reclamation; innovative solutions for land and space development; environmental treatment and impact; land economics and planning; and land analysis and management. Offshore wind power is one of the areas which RILS actively pursues. In November 2023, RILS delegates visited wind energy-related laboratories in Yangjiang, including the Yangjiang Offshore Wind Energy Laboratory and met with representatives of the Laboratory for potential research collaboration opportunities.

PolyU hosts JHMUA Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum to foster dialogue on university development in Jiangsu, Hong Kong and Macao

Hosted by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), the Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance (JHMUA) Annual Meeting and Presidents’ Forum was held yesterday on PolyU campus. The event brought together 130 education officials and senior management members from 38 member universities in Jiangsu, Hong Kong and Macao to discuss the development of the Alliance and collaboration in areas including talent development and research on innovative technologies. The distinguished guests in attendance at the meeting included: Ms LIU Jin, Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges (Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs) of the Ministry of Education; Dr CHOI Yuk Lin, Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Ms WU Cheng, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government (LOCPG) in the HKSAR; Mr LI Yongxian, Director of the University Office under the Education and Youth Affairs Department of the LOCPG in the Macao SAR; Mr TENG Sio Hong, Deputy Director of the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macao SAR; and Prof. James TANG Tuck-hong, Secretary-General of the University Grants Committee. In her opening remarks, Ms Liu Jin stated, “Tertiary institutions in Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao can complement each other’s strengths and share resources. The Ministry of Education actively supports them in strengthening exchanges and reinforcing synergies among themselves. In recent years, a number of university alliances have been established. JHMUA should focus on the big picture and provide support for national and regional development. Each university should leverage its strengths to promote the development of high-level universities in Jiangsu, Hong Kong and Macao. Additionally, the Alliance should also provide a platform to facilitate exchanges between tertiary institutions, contribute to global governance and nurture the next generation in these three places.” PolyU President Prof. Jin-Guang TENG remarked, “Since its inception in 2021, JHMUA has played a pivotal role in bringing together its member institutions to leverage complementary strengths and foster cooperation. It has facilitated numerous exchanges and cooperation activities and established various professional alliances that have enabled member institutions to engage in initiatives across different professional fields. In recent years, with JHMUA serving as a platform, PolyU has enhanced its collaboration with various municipal governments in Jiangsu Province. Together, we have established the PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute, founded in collaboration with the Wuxi Municipal Government. In addition, a memorandum of understanding was signed with the Nanjing Municipal Government for the establishment of the PolyU-Nanjing Technology and Innovation Research Institute. These initiatives have not only driven innovation and technology development in the Yangtze River Delta but also fostered industry-academia-research collaborations between universities and local governments.” Mr JIANG Yong, Director-General of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Education, delivered a speech via video link at the meeting, while Prof. Haitian LU, PolyU Director of Mainland Development Office was the event moderator. During the meeting, Prof. Wang Yonggui, Deputy Director of the School Affairs Committee of Nanjing Normal University, summarised the past achievements of JHMUA and outlined future work plans with a view to deepening the integration of resources among member institutions and driving innovation and development. In the Presidents’ Forum session, Prof. TAN Zhemin, President of Nanjing University; Prof. Yonghua SONG, Rector of the University of Macau; and Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, each delivered a report. They shared best practices and their experiences in promoting regional cooperation and higher education development, as well as offering suggestions on how to confront the challenges of the evolving era by leveraging their unique strengths and taking into account the characteristics of Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao. They also elaborated on their strategies and accomplishments in terms of talent development and scientific research. During the panel sessions, leaders from member institutions shared their insights into the opportunities and challenges facing higher education in the age of artificial intelligence and big data, as well as research and industrial-technological innovation in universities. The delegates also discussed various other issues including talent cultivation, education and teaching, research and innovation, and industry-academia cooperation with a view to inspiring the development of tertiary institutions in the new era. The event laid a solid foundation for JHMUA in its pursuit of new opportunities for advancement. Following the event, Dr LAM Tai-fai, PolyU Council Chairman; Prof. Jin-Guang Teng; alongside other members of the PolyU senior management team, welcomed over 200 esteemed guests to a dinner held at Hotel ICON. Distinguished attendees included Mrs Carrie LAM CHENG Yuet-ngor, former Chief Executive of the HKSAR; Prof. Tan Zhemin, President of Nanjing University; Mr LI Weihua, Vice Chairman of the Jiangsu Overseas Friendship Association; Mr SONG Lai, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Youth Affairs of the LOCPG in the HKSAR, as well as representatives from member institutions. The JHMUA was jointly established by Nanjing University, PolyU and the University of Macau in December 2021. Upholding its mission of “Openness, Sharing, and Diversity”, the Alliance aspires to leverage the advantages of tertiary institutions in Jiangsu Province, Hong Kong and Macao to strengthen exchange and collaboration in areas including talent cultivation and research in innovation and technology. With the full support of the governments of the three regions, the JHMUA now consists of 38 member institutions, including 26 from Jiangsu Province, nine from Hong Kong and three from Macao.

China Manned Space delegation visits PolyU

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) extended its warmest welcome to the China Manned Space delegation on the important occasion of their visit to the University. During the visit, the delegation participated in a memorable event, “A Dialogue between the China manned space delegation and PolyU students and faculty members”, held at the Jockey Club Auditorium. At the event, they engaged in discussion and exchange in the presence of an audience of approximately 700 PolyU students and faculty members. Dr CHOI Yuk Lin, Secretary for Education of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR); Dr WANG Weiming, Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs, Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR; Mr Tim LUI, Chairman of the University Grants Committee; PolyU Council Chairman Dr LAM Tai-fai; and PolyU President Prof. Jin-Guang TENG attended the event to welcome the delegation, expressing their pride and admiration for the successful manned space missions accomplished by the Nation in recent years. This opportunity allows them to witness and be encouraged by the Nation’s space development at close quarters. Indeed, recent years have witnessed extraordinary achievements in aerospace technologies by our Nation, which both inspire us and fill us with pride. With over 30 years of experience in deep space research, PolyU is the only university in Hong Kong that has participated in various national space projects. We express our heartfelt gratitude to the Nation for its trust and support. PolyU will continue to strengthen its research capabilities, reinforce cooperation with Mainland researchers, and make every effort to better integrate itself into the overall development of the Nation. Moving forward, we are committed to cultivating young individuals’ enthusiasm towards space exploration, encouraging them to delve into scientific research in order to contribute to the Nation’s advancement and support Hong Kong's development into an international innovation and technology hub.” At the event, three representatives from the delegation delivered presentations to share their experiences in manned space missions. They then engaged in discussion and exchange on aerospace technologies, astronaut training, and life in space with a doctoral student and an undergraduate student. They were joined by Prof. YUNG Kai-leung, Sir Sze-yuen Chung Professor in Precision Engineering, Chair Professor of Precision Engineering and Associate Head of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, and Director of the Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations of PolyU; as well as Prof. WU Bo, Fiona Cheung Professor in Spatial Science, Associate Head (Research) of the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, and Associate Director of Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations of PolyU. Prof. Jin-Guang Teng said, “The achievements of our country in aerospace technologies not only showcase the strength of our Nation but also foster advancements in related fields for the betterment of mankind. PolyU has played a vital role in various key space exploration missions for the Nation and will continue to provide staunch support to University researchers to take part in national space missions in the future.” Since 2010, PolyU has been participating in the Nation’s space exploration programmes and collaborating with the China Academy of Space Technology to develop and manufacture sophisticated space instruments. PolyU researchers have also used advanced topographic mapping technologies to evaluate and identify the best landing sites for spacecraft. These contributions supported the success of the Nation’s lunar exploration missions, including Chang'e-3, Chang'e-4 and Chang'e-5, as well as the Mars exploration project Tianwen-1. In 2021, PolyU established the “Research Centre for Deep Space Explorations”. In 2022, the University established the “Joint Research Centre of Advanced Aerospace Propulsion Technology” in collaboration with the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology.

PolyU joins hands with Hangzhou and Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province to build innovation platforms for advancing technologies and cultural tourism

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has teamed up with Hangzhou and Wenzhou, two major cities in Zhejiang Province, to build innovation platforms for advanced technology and innovation, as well as cultural tourism, with a view to deepening their collaborations with Hong Kong. The signing and unveiling ceremony of the PolyU-Wenzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Institute) was held at the Wenzhou People’s Congress Hall on 9 November, marking the official landing of the Institute in Wenzhou. The Institute strives to foster technological innovation, talent cultivation, and research and development (R&D), developing Wenzhou into an innovation and technology (I&T) hub. Separately, PolyU signed agreements with the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government and the Administration Committee of Wenzhou Bay New Area. Witnessed by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Mr ZHANG Zhenfeng, Secretary of Wenzhou Municipal Party Committee; Mr GE Yiping, Director of the Standing Committee of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Congress; and Mr CHEN Zuorong, Chairman of the Wenzhou Municipal People’s Political Consultative Conference, the agreement at the municipal level was signed by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU and Mr WANG Zhenyong, Vice-Mayor of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government; while at district level it was signed by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr ZHOU Yi-fu, Secretary of the Longwan District Committee of Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government. PolyU is the first university in Hong Kong to collaborate with Wenzhou Municipal People’s Government in setting up a technology and innovation research institute in Wenzhou. The Institute aims to promote I&T development in the Southeastern coastal region, in response to the industrial development needs of Wenzhou and Zhejiang Province specifically, and the Nation more broadly. The Institute will engage in close collaborations with local key industries in the areas of marine engineering equipment and technology, flexible electronics, and ultra-precision manufacturing to advance their core technologies, outcome transformation, talent development, and innovation and entrepreneurship, promoting the high-quality economic development of the cites. In his speech, Dr LAM Tai-fai emphasised that PolyU values research and innovation, actively promoting the transformation of research outcomes into practical applications, and believes the joint establishment of the Institute holds great promise. With its strong research capabilities and a pool of world-class scholars, the University provides a solid foundation for deep collaboration between Hong Kong and Wenzhou, which has a thriving private economy with a solid industrial foundation with hardworking and innovative talents. PolyU will further leverage its advantages in talents, academia, research, and internationalisation, while captalising on Wenzhou’s industrial clusters, innovation, talent cultivation, and R&D services to explore new methods, concepts, and perspectives in research for accelerating the transformation and application of research achievements as well as driving industrial upgrading. This innovation platform will serve as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with various stakeholders in Wenzhou in terms of talent attraction, innovation ecosystem, cultural inheritance and exchange, making greater contributions to high-quality regional development. Mr ZHANG Zhenfeng stated that innovation is in Wenzhou’s genes. In recent years, Wenzhou has always kept in mind the earnest instructions from General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping to continue writing the history of innovation. Wenzhou is determined to take the path of innovation-driven development by enhancing its capabilities for innovation, developing strategic innovation platforms and introducing university-industry research collaboration platforms. The cooperation with PolyU is perfectly timed, at the right place and with the right people. The Institute will become a powerful engine to develop Wenzhou into a nationally innovative city, a new force in fostering two industrial clusters with output valued at the trillion-yuan level, and a bridge to connect to global innovation resources. It will help enhance Wenzhou’s competitiveness in technological innovation, shape new trends in industrial development, and attract innovative international talents. Wenzhou will do its best to provide efficient services to ensure the smooth operation and development of the Institute. The PolyU delegation not only introduced the Institute’s development plan and presented a research showcase of the latest technology achievements for local enterprises, but also made visits to local universities. Moving forward, the two parties will stive to strengthen cooperation in technology, as well as promote academic and cultural exchanges between Wenzhou and Hong Kong to achieve a win-win outcome. Previously, the PolyU-Hangzhou Technology and Innovation Research Institute was also officially launched with a signing and unveiling ceremony on 7 November, in Hangzhou. The Institute aspires to promote advanced technology in the fields of Grand Canal culture and tourism, intelligent transportation and medical aesthetics, and will initially establish three research centres, namely the Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Research Center, Intelligent Rail Transit Center, and Digital Medical Aesthetics Research Center. These centres will collaborate with Hangzhou’s key industries and university research institutes in information technology and internet, cultural tourism, smart cities, biomedicine, and high-end equipment manufacturing, providing exchange platforms for researchers, technology innovation services for local enterprises, as well as application scenarios for cutting-edge PolyU technologies. Identified as one of the important provinces for national panning, Zhejiang province has been committed to promoting the coordinated development of education, technology and the economy. The establishment of the two new research institutes aims to build closer ties between Hong Kong and the two cities, bringing together innovative talents and resources. PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute officially inaugurated Joining force with Mainland enterprises to cultivate industry-academia-research collaborations and propel I&T development in the Yangtze River Delta

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Wuxi Municipal People’s Government of Jiangsu Province have jointly established the PolyU-Wuxi Technology and Innovation Research Institute (The Institute), and an Inauguration Ceremony cum Industry-University-Research Collaboration Agreement Signing Ceremony was held on 2 November. Located in Wuxi, the Institute serves as a platform to drive advanced research and innovation, as well as nurture innovation and technology (I&T) talents. It has entered into agreements with ten high-tech enterprises in Mainland China to foster industry-university-research collaborations, driving the Yangtze River Delta’s I&T development. A delegation led by Dr LAM Tai-fai, Council Chairman of PolyU; Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President; Prof. Wing-tak WONG, Deputy President and Provost; and Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) visited Wuxi and met with Mr DU Xiaogang, Communist Party Secretary of Wuxi; Mr ZHOU Changqing, Member of the Wuxi Party Committee Standing Committee and Head of the United Front Work Department; Mr QIN Yongxin and Mr ZHOU Wendong, Vice Mayors of Wuxi; and Mr CUI Rongguo, Party Chief of Wuxi National Hi-tech District and Party Secretary of Xinwu District. They had an in-depth exchange on reinforcing cooperation between Jiangsu and Hong Kong, along with leaders of various levels from the Wuxi Municipal Government and representatives from domestic companies. PolyU is the first Hong Kong tertiary institution to establish a research institute in Wuxi and participate in the Yangtze River Delta’s I&T drive. The Institute will focus on three key areas: building an internationally high-end research and innovation platform in the fields of aviation and aeronautical engineering, advanced manufacturing, biomedical engineering, artificial intelligence, new materials and telecommunications networks; establishing an incubation base to translate research outcomes into real-world solutions; and cultivating outstanding engineers and technopreneurs with a global perspective through PolyU’s leading engineering doctorate and postdoctoral fellowship programmes. The Institute will leverage PolyU’s global networks and impact to attract technology companies to the Wuxi High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, organise industry and academic exchange activities, and expand channels for international exchange and collaborations. To facilitate the translation of research achievements, the Institute signed agreements with ten domestic high-tech enterprises in Wuxi, namely Wuxi Hyatech Co., Ltd; Jiangsu Asia-pacific Aviation Technology Co., Ltd; Xiangsheng Biomedical Technology Co., Ltd; Jiangsu Sanlian Bioengineering Co., Ltd; Wuxi International Life Science Innovation Campus; Wuxi Autowell Technology Co., Ltd; Hymson Laser Technology Group Co., Ltd; Tonghe Carbon Materials Technology (Wuxi) Co., Ltd; Loulan Technology (Jiangsu) Co., Ltd; and GRG Metrology & Test (Wuxi) Co., Ltd. The Institute will serve as a platform to facilitate knowledge transfer and support enterprises in achieving technological advancement by leveraging PolyU’s expertise in innovation and research. Dr Lam Tai-fai, remarked, “By capitalising on its expertise in talent development, academic and research innovations, and global network, PolyU will collaborate with Wuxi’s industries to enhance R&D services, expedite the translation of research outcomes into practical applications, and promote industrial upgrading. PolyU and Hefei Luyang People’s Government to establish joint technology and innovation research institute

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Hefei Luyang People’s Government have reached an agreement to jointly establish the PolyU-Hefei Technology and Innovation Research Institute (the Research Institute), with the aim of fostering in-depth and effective collaboration in industry, academia and research and cultivating talents. The establishment of the Research Institute contributes to enhancing and facilitating research development, academic exchange, nurturing of talent and knowledge transfer in various fields, including biomedical and sensing precision technology, and aerospace information. By leveraging the research and academic excellence of PolyU, these collaborations support the development of a top-notch innovation platform in Hefei. Hefei is one of the national core areas for comprehensive technological innovation development. It has the first batch of national laboratories and is one of the cities with the most large-scale scientific facilities in the Mainland. The cooperation will also focus on creating a sustainable incubator for start-ups, driving innovation in emerging industries, developing key core technologies, and promoting their application based on the needs of Hefei’s economic development. The agreement was signed in Heifei city on 25 October in Hefei city by Prof. Christopher CHAO, Vice President (Research and Innovation) of PolyU and Mr SHI Kun, Executive Vice-Head of the Luyang District Government. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) and the Jinjiang Municipal People’s Government held a signing cum unveiling ceremony on 2 September at which the jointly established PolyU-Jinjiang Technology and Innovation Research Institute (Research Institute), based in Jinjiang, was officially inaugurated. This marks a significant achievement in promoting deeper cooperation between Fujian and Hong Kong, as well as a key step by both the University and the City towards creating a better future together. As a world-class research university, PolyU will take Jinjiang as a starting point to support its technological innovation and strengthen technical cooperation in the areas of textiles, smart manufacturing, integrated circuits and sustainable technology. PolyU hopes to deepen cooperation with local enterprises in Jinjiang through the Research Institute, promote research and help to transform core technologies, in time expanding from Jinjiang to Quanzhou and the entire province.
