PolyU Advances the Frontiers of Knowledge and Technology

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) continues to hold a leading position in the area of technology development despite keen competition among higher education institutes (HEI) in Hong Kong and the Greater China region. Well positioned because of its long history of specialization in practical subjects and applied technologies, the University enjoyed yet another fruitful year with significant milestones scattered along the way.

PolyU has been transferring university innovations to the industrial and commercial sectors all these years. Such university innovations not only led to enhanced efficacy and heightened professionalism, but also brought great impact to society with substantive benefits touching all people in it.

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University pledges to share university technology with society, through conducting knowledge transfer activities with business and industries. The commercial arm of PolyU, PolyU Technology and Consultancy Company Limited (PTeC), which is accredited with ISO9001, engages in knowledge transfer through consultancy and licensing of university technology for the betterment of industries and the community at large. PTeC enjoyed a record-breaking year in 2013/14, undertaking more than 560 consultancy projects and securing a turnover of HK$ 128 million.

In the meantime, knowledge transfer in the form of licensing allows companies to harness university inventions in order to sharpen their competitive edges while developing innovative products. In the year 2013/14, the Institute for Entrepreneurship of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University entered into more than 40 Memoranda of Understanding (MOU), non-disclosure agreements, or licensing agreements for its advanced knowledge and applied technologies.

In the year 2013/14, these successfully commercialized university inventions include: mobile phone antenna with low emission of radiation; application of complexes of polysaccharide protein from mushrooms to prepare nano-selenium hydrosol displaying anti-tumor properties; epigallocatechin gallate derivatives for the inhibition of proteasomes; vocational training system based on virtual reality technology; pressure monitored smart garments which can speed up scar healing; the list goes on and on. The overwhelming support from the industrial and commercial sectors provided the University with the impetus to carry on its endeavours in technology development.

PolyU has developed a wide range of innovative technologies and research breakthroughs with high application value. Search our innovations here. Welcome to contact us should you have interest in any of them.
