Dr Qu Xiao was invited as a panel speaker at the International Hotel Investment Summit held at the Park Hyatt in Shanghai, China, on 22 November 2008. The topic of his panel session was "Hotel Development and Investment Trends in China". Dr Xiao also gave a lecture on the "Value of Hotel Brand" in the Advanced Hotel Investment Executive Training Programme held at Hyatt on the Bund in Shanghai, China , on 24 November 2008 .
Dr Thomas Bauer attended the 16th APETIT Executive Meeting held in Bali, Indonesia, on 11 December 2008 as a representative of the SHTM. He presented the paper "Community-based Ecotourism in Natural Protected Areas and at the Viengxay Caves in Lao PDR", at UNESCAP APETIT Seminar on Promotion of Community-Based Tourism for Rural Development. Dr Bauer also gave a lecture on " Tourism and Climate Change" at the Bali Hotel and Tourism Institute on the following day.
Dr David Jones spoke at the China International Conference Industry Forum sponsored by the Beijing International Convention and Exhibition Association in Beijing on 16 December 2008 . He spoke on "Marketing Development of an International Conference: The One-to-One Approach". Dr Jones also spoke at the International Forum on Corporate Culture and Brand Originality in Beijing on 17 December 2008 on "Asian Hotel Leadership: Who is in Charge?"
Professor Rob Law, Dr Norman Au and SHTM PhD students Ms Rosanna Leung and Ms Shanshan Qi attended the 16th International Conference on Information Technology and Travel and Tourism – IFITT's Global Travel and Tourism Technology and eBusiness Forum (ENTER2009) held in Amsterdam, Netherlands on 28-30 January. Professor Law presented a paper entitled "Publication in Tourism Journals", Dr Au presented a paper entitled "Complaints on the Online Environment: The Case of Hong Kong Hotels" and Ms Qi presented a paper entitled "A Study of Chinese and International Online Users' Perceptions of Usefulness on Hotel Websites". The two PhD students also attended a PhD Workshop at which they presented papers.
Dr Thomas Bauer gave a talk on "Energy and Sustainability" at a seminar of the Youth Learning Project on Pacific Economic Cooperation 2008/2009 held in Hong Kong on 30 January 2009. He also spoke to staff and students of the Hong Kong Baptist University's Department of Geography on "Sustainable Tourism Management in Antarctica" on 12 February 2009 .
