HSEO Safety Courses in October 2011

Health, Safety and Environment Office will arrange three safety courses in October 2011 as follows:

a)      Laser Safety Course
b)     Radiation Safety of Irradiating Apparatus
c)      Manual Handling Refresher Training  

Laser Safety Course

1.   Basic concepts of laser
2.   Laser hazards
3.   Classification of laser equipment
4.   Principles of laser safety
5.   Control measures of the PolyU
Course objectives:
The course aims to provide basic safety training for personnel working with or intended to work with laser equipment.

Target group(s):
Potential users of high-power (class 3B or 4) laser equipment. Users of high-power laser equipment must have received proper laser safety training before they are authorized by their corresponding departments to operate high?power laser equipment.  Attendees of this course are considered to have fulfilled this requirement.

Personnel, who have already attended similar courses or trained in laser safety using HSEO’s web-based self-learning system, are not required to attend this course but they are welcome to take this course as reinforcement.

Radiation Safety of Irradiating Apparatus

Course objectives:
To equip attendees with basic radiation safety knowledge to meet the pre-requisite for application of registration as a user of irradiating apparatus in PolyU.

Target group(s):
Potential users of closed-beam X-ray equipment Personnel, who have already trained in radiation safety using HSEO’s web-based self?learning system, are not required to attend this course but they are welcome to take this course as reinforcement.

Manual Handling Refresher Training

1. Basic understanding of the anatomy and function of the spine and the basic ergonomics principle.
2. Legal requirements of employers, employees,   preliminary and further risk assessments.
3. The hazards and causes of injury associated with manual handling operations.
4. The necessary preventive and protective measures.
5. The safe and proper manual handling methods.
6. Exchange experience & Practical session
Course objectives:
This course aims to refresh participants who attended a manual handling operations training course before, to revise their manual handling skills and knowledge, and give an opportunity for them to exchange experience during the training session. 

Target group(s):
All staff members who attended manual handling operations course before and wish to refresh themselves are welcome to attend. 

Remarks: If possible, please state the types of manual handling operations required to be performed by the participant(s) in the ‘Remarks’ box of  the Enrolment Form so that HSEO can make better arrangements (practical session) for the course.
