The naming thus reflects the objective to benefit society through knowledge transfer.

Professor Gilman Siu
Professor Gilman Siu, Professor of Department of Health Technology and Informatics at PolyU, was trained as a medical laboratory technologist as a PolyU undergraduate, earning his BSc degree in biomedical science with first-class honour. In 2011, he was conferred with a PhD degree in microbiology by the University of Hong Kong. For over 15 years, Professor Siu has been actively engaged in researches related to microbial genomics, encompassing domains such as advanced molecular testing for rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases; genetic mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and virulence in highly infectious bacteria and viruses (for example, mycobacterium tuberculosis and HIV); and molecular epidemiology of newly emerging infectious agents (like the COVID-19 virus). Having published over 45 peer-reviewed research papers in high-impact academic journals, such as Lancet Respiratory Medicine and Clinical Chemistry, on the subject of emerging infectious diseases, Professor Siu has been granted more than HK$40 million of external research funds over the past five years. For two years in a row, he was honoured by PolyU with a faculty research and teaching award (individual) in recognition of his excellence in research and teaching. In addition, Professor Siu is also appointed by the government as a member of Medical Laboratory Technologist Board and the Chairman of the Board’s examination and education committee. Amid the pandemic, his rapid sequencing technique has played a pivotal role in identifying and stopping transmission chains of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, providing scientific support for the government to formulate anti-pandemic measures. In 2021, Professor Gilman Siu bestowed Outstanding Project Team on COVID-19 Research Awards by the Food and Health Bureau in recognition of his excellent research efforts on COVID-19.
