Professor Wu Bo
Professor Wu Bo, Associate Head (Research) and Professor of Department of Land Surveying and Geo-informatics of PolyU, had developed great interest in surveying and mapping when he was an undergraduate. At graduate school, he decided to switch to explore photogrammetry and remote sensing. Later, he discovered the untapped potential of applying surveying and mapping techniques for space exploration. Since then, he has expanded his horizons from the earth to the universe, embarking on his alternative journey of space exploration.
After Professor Wu received his doctorate degree in photogrammetry and remote sensing from Wuhan University in 2006, he worked as a postdoc researcher at the Ohio State University in the United States and participated in the NASA-funded projects for Mars and Moon exploration missions. Since joining PolyU in 2009, he had developed innovative 3D topographic mapping and geomorphological analysis techniques which contributed to the landing site mapping and selection for China’s Chang’e-3, Chang’e-4, Chang’e-5 lunar missions, and the Tianwen-1 mission to Mars.
Professor Wu has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles in internationally renowned journals and conferences. He has secured research funding of over HK$20 million from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, including a RGC Research Impact Fund of HK$6.38 million.
For his outstanding academic achievements, Professor Wu was showered with numerous awards, including Special Merit Award and Gold Medal at the 44th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, ESRI Award for Best Scientific Paper in Geographic Information Systems, Talbert Abrams Award, John Davidson President’s Award from American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, and Duane Brown Senior Award for Photogrammetry from the Ohio State University.
