Ir Professor H. C. Man
lr Professor Man Hau-chung, currently Chair Professor in Materials Engineering, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Director of University Research Facilities in 3D printing (U3DP) at PolyU, had a glorious research career provoked by his fascination with the unrivalled power of laser beams. After earning his PhD degree, he worked in the U.K. for a few years to promote the applications of high-power laser in industries. He subsequently joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic. In 1994, he secured funding from the Industry and Technology Development Council to establish the Laser Materials Processing Centre with its mandate to conduct research on laser technologies and to facilitate technology transfer to the local manufacturing industry.
Professor Man's research interests include high-power laser materials processing, advanced manufacturing technologies, additive manufacturing, surface engineering, corrosion and materials technologies. A Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, U.K., a Fellow of the Laser Institute of America, a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Sciences and a member of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers, Professor Man has published over 270 papers in top-tier journals, such as Applied Surface Science, Corrosion Science, Surface and Coatings Technology, Scripta Materialia, and Journal of Materials Processing Technology. He has been the editor of Surface and Coatings Technology since 2010.
Recently, he has dedicated his efforts to managing and promoting U3DP, while researching on additive manufacturing, in a view to inspire students to be innovative in product design and engineering. He also collaborates with healthcare professionals to develop surgical training facilities, face shields, medical devices and implants.
