PolyU research on sustainability

Sustainable urban development is among the priorities PolyU has identified for charting the way forward. Recently, Sing Tao Daily featured a six-part series on PolyU’s sustainability research to let the community know more about the University’s contributions in this area. In this issue of Excel@PolyU, three of the projects will be introduced first:

Nanotechnology to clean wastewater

Prof. Pauline Li of Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology has developed a special nano-particle that purifies wastewater more efficiently. As the absorbent particles can be recycled, the cost of this innovative technology can be further reduced.

Innovative solar technology

Prof. Charles Surya of Department of Electronic and Information Engineering revealed that PolyU is developing a highly efficient solar panel using sulfides instead of silicon. He also said that the University is collaborating with mainland authority and institution to set up a solar energy research centre in Dongguan to advance the development of solar technology and its usage.

Wind turbines with high efficiency

Prof. Yang Hong-xing, Professor of Department of Building Services Engineering and Coordinator of Renewable Energy Research Group, has been engaged in the research on wind and solar power technology. The vertical deign of the wind turbine reduces friction and noise, enhancing its efficiency and making it suitable for use on rooftops of buildings. Prof. Yang also anticipated renewable energy to make up a higher percentage of the energy market in the future.
