At the 2011 Going Global Conference organized by the British Council in Hong Kong from 10 to 12 March, PolyU President Prof. Timothy Tong, representing the Heads of Universities Committee, gave a presentation on “Creating Prosperity: the Role of Higher Education in Driving the Creative Economy”.

In his views, the ultimate role of a higher education institution is to foster the social and economic development of its own city, its country and the world, effecting changes in society that will enhance sustainable well-being for all. He said that, in view of the growing importance of the creative economy, the Hong Kong higher education institutions were keen to respond to the government’s call for boosting the local creative industries and enhancing Hong Kong’s creative capacity. The institutions supported it in a number of ways:

1/ nurturing of creative talents
2/ conducting more research related to creative industries
3/ facilitating knowledge transfer and collaborations

Prof. Tong also said that the upcoming change to the four-year undergraduate structure would offer the Hong Kong higher education sector a good opportunity to redesign the curriculum, with more focus on arts and culture, innovation and creativity.
