BRE Students Achieved Gold at Chun Wo Innovation Student Awards 2024

Well-done to Miss TAM Ka Man and Miss WONG Wing Shan, our BSc (Hons) Surveying students, Miss CHAN Lam Yan, our BSc (Hons) Building Engineering and Management student and Mr DU Haoxun, a BSc (Hons) Computing Science student, for winning the Gold Award at the ‘Chun Wo Innovation Student Awards 2024 – Engineers: Overcoming World’s Challenges’!   Under the supervision of Dr ZHANG Fan, former Research Assistant Professor of BRE, their winning project ‘Renewable Material Coagulant’ addresses global challenges by developing a low-carbon alternative to traditional cement for ground stabilisation. By utilizing industrial by-products, their solution achieves more than an 80% reduction in carbon emissions.   Selected from over 40 teams representing 18 institutions across Hong Kong and the Greater Bay Area, the team stood out for their achievement. They received their award from Ir Michael FONG, JP, Director of the Civil Engineering and Development of the Government of the HKSAR, and warmest congratulations from Prof. Michael YAM, Head of BRE, at the Award Presentation Ceremony on 28 July 2025. The event was well attended by government officials, industry leaders and academic representatives. In addition, Chun Wo will further provide relevant resources and investment to help the winning teams bring their innovative ideas to life.

The Best Individual Dissertation 2025_Ms CHOW WaI Lam Christy

Miss Christy CHOW Awarded HKIE Best Individual Dissertation 2025

Congratulations to Miss Christy CHOW Wai Lam, a final-year student of the BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management programme, on receiving the Best Individual Dissertation Award 2025 from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (Building Division)! Christy's winning dissertation, entitled ‘Study on the Efficiency of Project Management of Implementing Terrestrial Laser Scanning in Hong Kong’, was supervised by Prof. WEI Hsi Hsien, Associate Professor of BRE. She was honoured with this award at the HKIE Building Division Annual Dinner 2025 on 8 May. During the event, she received warm congratulations from many attendees, particularly, Prof. Michael YAM, Head of BRE and Prof. Daniel CHAN, her academic advisor and Associate Professor of BRE.

Presidential Student Leadership 2024 - CHONG Hung Lee

Miss CHONG Hung Lee Honoured with Presidential Student Leadership Award 2024

Our surveying student, Miss CHONG Hung Lee received the ‘Presidential Student Leadership Award 2024’ in recognition of her leadership skills! PolyU launched this Award in the academic year 2022/23 with the purpose of recognising our student leaders and encouraging them to realise their full potential. Hung Lee said, “Receiving the Presidential Student Leadership Award is a profound honour that fills me with pride and gratitude. It symbolises the trust PolyU has placed in my potential as a leader and change-maker. This award acknowledges the values I strive to uphold: responsibility, compassion and service.” Drawing upon her experiences, such as working with children in Taiwan and Nepal, she aims to foster socially responsive change in the built environment. She added, “I am deeply thankful for this award, which encourages me to keep learning, growing and giving back, particularly, for the profession and the communities.”

Mr Matthew YAU Shun Kit Selected as The Outstanding BRE Student 2024/25

Congratulations to Mr Matthew YAU Shun Kit, a BRE Surveying student, on being selected as the recipient of ‘The Outstanding Student Award of  the Department of Building and Real Estate’! In recognition of Matthew’s remarkable accomplishments and contributions, he was presented with the Award by Prof. Jin-Guang TENG, President of PolyU, at the Presentation Ceremony in April. The event was marked with warm congratulations and enthusiastic applause from all in attendance. The PolyU Outstanding Student Awards aim to recognise full-time final-year students for their excellence in both academic and non-academic endeavours. The Awards are presented annually at department, faculty and university levels. Matthew said, “I am truly honoured to receive the Outstanding Student Award of BRE. This recognition inspires me to push beyond my current accomplishments, explore new opportunities and embrace greater challenges with unwavering determination.” He further shared, “One of my most transformative experiences was participating in the Chartered Institute of Building’s Global Student Challenge 2024.  Representing PolyU, our team won third place from among more than 40 teams worldwide for designing a reusable temporary housing solution for NGOs. The design can function as a home, school or medical centre in post-war and earthquake relief situations. This experience made me realise that I could contribute to improving the lives of those in need through my expertise and creativity, especially in our ever-changing world where conflicts and disasters are increasingly common.” For Matthew, being an outstanding student extends beyond academic success; it also involves giving back to the community.  Receiving this Award validates his dedication and inspires him to contribute even more to society in the next chapter of his life.

BRE Students and Graduate Awarded Bronze Prize in the 14th Challenge Cup Chinese University Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition (第十四屆『挑戰盃』中國大學生創業計劃競賽)

第十四屆『挑戰盃』中國大學生創業計劃競賽) BRE students and graduates were honoured to receive the Bronze Prize for their project, ‘AI Automated Construction Site Plan Layout’, at the 14th Challenge Cup Chinese University Student Entrepreneurship Plan Competition in Xi’an in November. The ‘Challenge Cup’ is widely regarded as the Olympic Games of youth innovation and technology in China. Since its launch in 1989, it has consistently upheld the principles of valuing science, seeking truth, diligent learning, bold innovation, and embracing challenge. BRE Students Received RICS Hong Kong Student Awards

Congratulations to the BRE undergraduate and postgraduate students on being selected for the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) Hong Kong Student Awards! We were delighted to celebrate their exceptional academic achievements at the inaugural RICS Hong Kong Student Awards Ceremony this month. These bright minds were awarded certificates in recognition of their hard work and dedication. This event marked asignificant milestone, celebrating the excellence of RICS accredited degree programmes and universities, and above all, honoring our future surveying talents. Miss Connie WONG Awarded Professional Development Commendation Award and Best Student of HKIH

Congratulations to Miss Connie WONG Sze Lam a graduate of the BSc (Hons) in Property Management programme! In November, she was honoured with the Professional Development Commendation Award and the Best Student Award of the Hong Kong Institute of Housing (HKIH) at the HKIH Annual Dinner cum Elite Awards Presentation Ceremony 2024. Launched in 2024, the Professional Development Commendation Award aims to recognise graduates of its accredited programmes who have demonstrated outstanding academic performance and a commitment to continuous professional development in housing management. HKIH also encourages practitioners and university graduates from diverse fields to enrol in its accredited programmes, so fostering their professional and academic growth for future advancement as senior executives in the housing management industry. Connie was selected as ‘The Most Outstanding PolyU Student 2023’ in recognition of her remarkable achievements, contributions and hard work. Graduating in 2024, she scooped a wide range of accolades and scholarships throughout her studies.

BRE Students Awarded CIOB Certificate of Excellence

Congratulations to Ms Phyllis LOW Suet Ee, from the MSc in Project Management programme and Mr MUHAMMAD Junaid Khalid, a BSc (Hons) in Building Engineering and Management student on receiving the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Certificate of Excellence! Ms Caroline GUMBLE, CIOB Chief Executive, presented this prestigious accolade to the two students in October 2024, in recognition of their outstanding achievement in attaining the highest marks on their respective programmes. Phyllis expressed her feelings, saying, “I am honoured to receive the Certificate of Excellence from the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) for my achievements on my master’s programme at PolyU. This award reflects the supportive academic environment fostered by my professors. My experience at PolyU has been transformative, with a rigorous curriculum and hands-on projects that have encouraged critical and creative thinking. Engaging with industry leaders and CIOB representatives has offered invaluable insights into the construction and building management sectors. I am grateful for the guidance of my mentors and the collaboration with classmates. I look forward to contributing to the field of construction internationally.” Junaid Khalid said, “I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to CIOB for this incredible recognition and for their visit to Hong Kong. I am also grateful to my department for nominating me for this award and providing unwavering support throughout my academic journey. The mentorship and guidance of BRE staff have been instrumental to my development and success, providing invaluable insights into the world of digital construction and beyond. I am excited to continue contributing to the field and look forward to many more opportunities to learn and grow through CIOB and as an alumnus of PolyU.” This recognition is a tremendous honour, and we are deeply grateful to CIOB for acknowledging our students’ hard work.

BRE Students Received SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation x PolyU Building Homes with Heart Scholarship

Our students, Miss CHO Phoena, Miss CHEN Yingying and Miss LEUNG Cheuk Yan from the BSc (Hons) in Surveying programme, were honoured at the Building Homes with Heart Scholarship Programme in August. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the SHKP-Kwoks’ Foundation and PolyU. Launched in 2022, the Scholarship Programme is tailored to offer assistance to extraordinary PolyU students who encounter financial difficulties as they pursue their degrees in construction, real estate or engineering-related disciplines. At the award ceremony, Mr Adam KWOK, Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties, presented the Scholarships to the awardees, with each student receiving up to HK$40,000. Prof. Ben YOUNG, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs) of PolyU, and Mr Robert CHAN, Executive Director of SHKP and a PolyU graduate, shared their visions for academia-industry collaboration and the nurturing of future talents for the industry. The recipients expressed their sincere gratitude for the Scholarships, particularly in terms of alleviating their financial burdens and providing significant encouragement.
