Wu Zhi Qiao Charitable Foundation - Site Survey in Shannxi

To make contributions to the livelihood of local communities in the Chinese mainland, particularly in underdeveloped areas, and to foster mutual understanding and care for people in these areas. A group of students and teachers from the Faculty of Construction and Land Use and School of Design, together with representatives from Xian Jiaotong University visited Shannxi from 23 November to 25 November 2007. The purpose of the visit is to conduct a site survey to locate a possible bridge site in Shannxi province and to make necessary preparation for building a bridge for them in the future.

Faculty of Construction and Land Use Graduation and Prize Presentation Ceremony

The first ever Graduation and Prize Presentation Ceremony organized by the The Faculty of Construction and Land Use (FCLU) for its four academic departments, namely Building and Real Estate, Building Services Engineering, Civil and Structural Engineering and Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics, at the Jockey Club Auditorium on campus was conducted successfully on 5-6 November 2007.

Presided by Prof. Jin-Guang Teng, Dean of FCLU, the presentation of over 900 graduates and Dean's Honours List awardees individually on stage at the 5 sessions of the Ceremony was witnessed by over 1,600 guests, parents and friends. The ceremony of the department of Civil and Structural Engineering was graced by a Guest of Honour, Mr C.K. Mak, Permanent Secretary for Development (Works), Development Bureau. The formal conferment of academic awards, ranging from higher diploma to doctorate degrees, was made at the University Congregation on 1 December 2007 at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

International Workshop on Collaborative Human Futures

Around 20 leading experts in the areas of Architecture, Building, Civil Engineering and Design from Australia, Finland, France, Hong Kong, UK and USA participated in the International Workshop on Collaborative Human Futures organized by Faculty of Construction and Land Use of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) held at Cyberport from 19 to 20 November.

Entitled ¡§Collaborative Human Futures ¡V A New Design Paradigm¡¨, the workshop aimed at providing insights into the potential use, development and limitations of the current collaborative technologies and practices for researchers and practitioners of the building and construction industry.

In the first morning of the two-day workshop, Chairman of the workshop Prof. Geoffery Shen, Associate Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Land Use of PolyU, gave an overview of the theme. At the opening session of the workshop, Professor J.G. Teng, Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Land Use delivered a Welcoming Address. Ms. Ada Fung, Deputy Director of the Housing Department and Mr. Ho-kin Li, Chief Architect of Architectural Services Department delivered Opening Addresses to the delegates.

The workshop was closed with an insightful discussion on the directions for future research chaired by Prof. Peter Brandon of Salford University of UK, who together with Prof. Andrew Baldwin of Loughborough University, former Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Land Use co-organized the workshop.

Distinguished Lecture on ¡§Assuring success of integrated enterprise management solutions for the construction industry¡¨

Wu Zhi Qiao Seminar on 3 April 2007
In a poor and remote village in Gansu, a primitive wooden plank bridge was the only crossing for village children to go between school and home. They endured dangerous journeys day by day. Professor Edward Ng of Chinese University of Hong Kong initiated the "The Bridge Too Far" project. With the help of volunteers, professionals and students, the first "Wu Zhi Qiao" was built in July 2005. In the seminar, Prof. Ng talked about

70th Anniversary FCLU High Table Dinner
The Faculty of Construction and Land Use (FCLU) recently organized its first High Table Dinner, which provided a chance for students to interact with prominent industry leaders. The event also celebrated the University's 70 years of proud history in educating professionals for the building, engineering and construction industries.

The dinner was joined by about 300 industry leaders, students, alumni and faculty embers, including Mr Marco Wu Moon-hoi, Vice Chairman of Hong Kong Housing Society and Awardee of PolyU Outstanding Alumni 2007; Ir Prof. Ko Jan-ming, PolyU Vice President (Research Development) and Dean of FCLU (2000-2005); Prof. Michael Anson, First Dean of FCLU; and Prof. Andrew Baldwin, incumbent Dean of FCLU.

INYS Conference
Since year 2004, the British Council Hong Kong had co-organised with the universities in Hong Kong several educational exchange programmes called ¡¥International Networking for Young Scientists (INYS)¡¦ between post doctorates and academics in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom in every January. This year, Prof. Edwin H. W. Chan of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (Faculty of Construction and Land Use, and Public Policy Research Institute) has been invited to lead the event and chair the Organizing Committee.

The theme of the INYS programme 2007 was to discuss policy issues on sustainable built environment, and a conference and a discussion workshop were held on 24 - 25 January 2007.
