Chairman Lam, Council Members, President Teng, distinguished guests,
I am truly honoured and grateful to be awarded University Fellowship by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). I sincerely thank the University and the community for their trust, which has allowed me to make a modest contribution to both society and education, and to receive this high distinction.
I grew up in a family engaging in the garment and fashion business. From a young age and under the influence of my late father, I came to appreciate the charisma of the fashion industry, and I joined the field after graduating from a university in the UK. I was deeply grateful for the opportunity to contribute a different perspective and to be a witness to the industry evolvement from manufacturing to retail as well as the brand management. Since mid-70s, I have helped to develop menswear and womenswear brands, diversified our operations, introduced and acquired international brands to Hong Kong’s fashion market, while also leading these brand labels into the Chinese Mainland and around the world. Looking back, I feel incredibly fortunate to have witnessed and played a small role in the industry’s remarkable transformation and rise to international prominence.
Over the years, I have been given many opportunities to contribute to industry and community. Through my involvement in university governance, I have seen the energy and creativity of the younger generation, and I have come to appreciate even more deeply the importance of nurturing their talents. I have always believed in close collaboration between industry and academia in talent development. It has been my privilege to support the establishment of PolyU’s School of Fashion and Textiles, and I take great pride to witness its growth from a department to a full fledged school advancing research and education.
I remain humbled to learn and to serve the community. This journey has brought me great fulfilment and invaluable lessons. With this fellowship, I am more determined than ever to stay true to my aspirations, to support PolyU’s long term development, and to nurture future leaders and pillars dedicated to serving society.
Finally, I am grateful to my late parents, as well as my family and friends for their unwavering support. All glory, honour, and praise to the Lord! Thank you all.
