Physical Layer of Optical Fiber Communication and Sensor Systems
Name of Activity / Workshop: |
Physical Layer of Optical Fiber Communication and Sensor Systems |
Description / Introduction: |
Chromatic dispersion, polarization mode dispersion, nonlinear effects, and loss are important issues on the physical layer of fiber optical communication and sensor systems. It is essential that these degrading physical effects be well managed in the optical fiber systems. On the other hand, they can also be beneficial and have applications on optical signal processing and sensing. This presentation gave a brief review of the recent research in this area as conducted by the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, including digital carrier recovery in coherent optical communication system based on decision-aided maximum likelihood algorithm; optical performance monitoring; and non-invasive smart health monitoring system based on optical fiber sensor. |
