HKPolyU Racing Rollout Ceremony & Media Preview: Debut of HKF-01E

Description / Introduction:

HKPolyU Racing is the first cross-faculty team and the only formula racing team formed by local university students, representing Hong Kong to compete in the Formula Student Electric China (FSEC) that was held in Xiangyang City, Hubei in October 2017, against 43 other teams.

In a media preview organized by Communications and Public Affairs Office (CPA) on 6 September 2017, HKPolyU Racing Team made a debut of their self-designed formula-styled racing car HKF-01E. In the media preview, HKPolyU Racing team members together with team advisors - Dr TONG and Dr Winslet CHAN shared how they have applied science, technology, engineering and math for designing, developing and marketing the first electrical racing car ever in Hong Kong - HKF-01E - through the collaborative efforts of students from Faculty of Engineering and students from Faculty of Business.

The cross-faculty team, with over 70 student members from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, unveiled its self-designed racing car HKF-01E before the eyes of some 200 supporters and sponsors in and out of the University at the rollout ceremony on 8th September 2017. It took the team two years to design and manufacture the car. Over the period, the team has received support and guidance from more than 20 academic and technical staff of PolyU. It has obtained about HK$600,000 in total from various PolyU faculties and departments, including the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Business, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, School of Design and International Affairs Office. Externally, the team has received support of various means from more than 30 companies and organisations in the industry, who have provided the students with financial back-up, sponsored materials, technical advice, driver training, etc. Addressing the ceremony, PolyU Vice President (Research Development) Ir. Professor Alexander WAI Ping-kong thanked all industry partners, sponsors, teaching and technical colleagues of the University, as well as internal and external advisors for their support and assistance "to enable the youths to learn working as a team, to handle ups, downs and losses, and, most importantly, to pursue their dreams." The team's racing dream was initiated by nine PolyU Mechanical Engineering students in 2015, who aspired to construct their Final Year Project on building a racing car for joining a formula competition. Since then, the 9-member team has been gradually expanded into a cross-faculty team, with business student-members taking up the duties of building marketing plan, cost analysis, promotion, soliciting sponsorships and support.
