ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Mr David Lau, Chief Executive Officer of Ocean Sky Hotel Management Limited and 2013 graduate of the MSc in International Hospitality Management, received the SHTM Outstanding Alumni Award 2020 at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University's 26th Congregation (SHTM) held virtually on 27 March 2021.
Five SHTM graduates received awards at the Congregation.

Mr Chen Cheuk Chun, Gerald received the SHTM Student of the Year Award 2019/2020.
Miss Ahn Seo Won received the Best Undergraduate Honours Thesis Award 2019/20 for a thesis entitled "Understanding the Linkage of Attribute-benefit-value-intention (ABVI) of Vegan Foods as Perceived by Vegan Diners".
Miss Yang Yihan received the Best MSc Dissertation Award 2019/20 for a thesis entitled "Children's Visual Representation of Memorable Travel Experience: Emotion, Memorability and Experience".
Dr Feng Xiaohong received the Best D.HTM Thesis Award 2019/20 for a thesis entitled "Children's Tourism Consumer Socialization: Role of Personal Features, Family Communication Patterns, and Tourism Attachment".
Dr Tse Wai Tsz, Serene received the Best Ph.D. Thesis Award 2019/20 for a thesis entitled "Tourist Stereotypes from the Resident Perspective: Implicit and Explicit Assessments, Emotional Reactions and Behavioural Responses".
Miss Wong Hei Ching, Onyx, a final year student in the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, received the Outstanding Student Award of School and The Most Outstanding PolyU Student Award 2020 at PolyU's Outstanding Student Awards presentation ceremony on 12 March 2021. The Outstanding Student Awards are granted annually to full-time final-year students who excel in both academic and non-academic pursuits during their studies. Awardees are presented with prizes and their names are inscribed on a plaque on the PolyU campus.
Professor Kaye Chon was appointed Hong Kong Convention Ambassador by the Hong Kong Tourism Board for two years commencing December 2020.
Dr Eric Chan, Professor Haiyan Song and Dr Liz Zhou were awarded the third prize for outstanding research by the Hubei Provincial Academy of Social Sciences for a co-authored paper entitled "Social Capital and Entrepreneurial Mobility in Early-stage Tourism Development: A Case from Rural China".
Professor Brian King received "The Best Article of the Year 2020 of TRR" for a co-authored paper entitled "NGOs in Ecotourism: Patrons of Sustainability or Neo-colonial Agents? Evidence from Africa", which was published in Tourism Recreation Research.
Eight SHTM faculty and staff members, namely Professor Kaye Chon, Professor Rob Law, Dr Eric Chan, Dr Henry Tsai, Dr Nelson Tsang, Ms Carol Chan, Mr Chris Luk and Mr Murphy Tang, were honoured by PolyU with Long Service Awards in recognition of their loyal and dedicated service to the institution over the years.
Hotel ICON, the SHTM's fully integrated teaching and research hotel, was named as a Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Hotel for the seventh time in a row. Forbes Travel Guide is the only global authority on luxury travel hospitality.
SHTM students came second and third in the Undergraduate Research Competition at the 2021 West Federation CHRIE Conference on 18-20 February. Under the guidance of Dr Mimi Li, Miss Chenxi Yu, a Year 3 student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management programme alongside fellow students from Sun Yat-Sen University took second place for a co-authored paper entitled "Recovery of Hotels in Hong Kong from the Protests: Evidence from Tourists' Emotional Changes". Third place went to Miss Hauyan Chan, a final-year student in the BSc (Hons) in Hotel Management programme under the guidance of Dr Gemmy Moon, for a co-authored paper entitled "Millennials' Perceptions of Staycation in Hong Kong under COVID-19: A Qualitative Approach".
