The Honourable Sir Michael Kadoorie Bestowed
SHTM Lifetime Achievement Award
The Honourable Sir Michael Kadoorie, GBS, L.L.D.(Hons), DSc(Hons), Commandeur de la Légion D'Honneur, Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Commandeur de L'Ordre de la Couronne, Commandeur de L'Ordre de Léopold II, was this year's recipient of the SHTM Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to him at a ceremony held in his honour at Hotel ICON on 22 September 2017.

The SHTM Lifetime Achievement Award honours outstanding personalities who have contributed substantially to the development of hospitality and tourism in Hong Kong, the region and around the world. The award recognises leaders who help define the global hospitality landscape and advance the industry. The inaugural award went to Mr Adrian Zecha, founder of Aman Resorts, last year.

At the award ceremony, Professor Timothy W. Tong, PolyU President, observed that Sir Michael has made immense contributions to the international hotel sector and is continuously redefining standards of hospitality and luxury. Sir Michael and his family also support Hong Kong's development in other aspects and have funded many community initiatives to serve the disadvantaged in Hong Kong and other Asian countries, and have done so with humility. Sir Michael is a stellar role model and mentor for young people.

Sir Michael said that it was a great honour to be recognised for his contribution to the hospitality and tourism sectors, which in itself has been tremendously rewarding. He said that the award belongs to all those with whom he has had the privilege of working and is a testament to the vision and dedication of generations of management and staff. He commented that we should all be proud that Hong Kong has a world-class school of hotel and tourism management that provides many opportunities to cultivate and advance industry standards and to nurture talent to in further the hospitality industry's growth.

Sir Michael's enduring contributions to the hospitality industry have come in the commercial and philanthropic sectors. The success and expansion of the Peninsula Group, within the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, owes much to the keen personal interest he shows in all aspects of the Group's work and in the location and design of new hotels. He displays this same energy in seeking to make greater opportunities available to the disadvantaged.

Although Sir Michael has many business commitments and responsibilities and is actively involved in a wide programme of philanthropic funding, it is his passion for hospitality in these fields that makes him one of Hong Kong's foremost and visionary hoteliers.

Sir Michael is Chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels Limited, CLP Holdings Limited, Heliservices (Hong Kong) Limited and Metrojet Limited. He is also a Director of Sir Elly Kadoorie & Sons Ltd and holds a number of directorships in other companies and organisations.

Professor Kaye Chon, SHTM Dean, Chair Professor and Walter Kwok Foundation Professor in International Hospitality Management, said that the SHTM prides itself on being a leader in world hospitality and tourism research and education. The School's commitment to excellence is supported by industry titans and visionaries such as Sir Michael Kadoorie. With our international faculty, diverse student body and an influential support base, the SHTM will continue to scale new heights and play a pivotal role in nurturing talent for the advancement of the entire industry.

The award ceremony was attended by over 300 guests.
