Professor Brian King delivered a keynote presentation entitled "Resorts - Coming to an Asia-Pacific City Near You!" at the 3rd Annual International Conference on Tourism and Hospitality Research in Singapore on 14-15 December 2015.
Dr Sam Kim presented a paper entitled "The Chinese Traveller and How to Deal with this Desired Class of Visitors as a City Destination" in a panel session on "Setting the Scene: Positioning City Tourism in the Global Marketplace: Quantitative and Qualitative Approaches" at the UNWTO 4th Global Summit on City Tourism: "Re-Inventing City Tourism" in Marrakesh, Morocco on 14-15 December 2015.
Professor Brian King, Professor Hanqin Qiu and Dr Tony Tse were invited to give a talk on their study "Social Sustainability of Tourism" at the Retail & Tourism Committee Roundtable Luncheon in Hong Kong on 6 January 2016. Professor Qiu shared the findings of the study, the development of a valid and reliable scale of social sustainability for tourism that assesses social sustainability in destination settings, and how they could affect policy making.
Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Dan Wang, Mr Ryan Smith and Ph.D. students Ms Daisy Fan, Ms Bona Kim, Ms Soey Lei and Mr Anyu Liu attended the 21st Annual Graduate Education & Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism, Philadelphia, USA on 7-9 January 2016. Professor Chon participated in a panel session entitled "So You Want to Publish - View from the Editors". Dr Wang moderated the concurrent session on "Travel & Tourism". The following faculty members presented papers at the conference.
  • Mr Smith presented a paper entitled "Perception of Cooking in Asia and America as a Career".
  • Ms Fan presented a co-authored paper on "Exploring the Dimensionality of Tourist-Host Social Contact and the Typology of Tourists".
  • Ms Kim presented a co-authored paper entitled "What are the Most and Least Important Attributes for Hotel Selection? A Comparison between Upscale and Budget Hotels".
  • Ms Lei and Dr Wang presented their co-authored paper entitled "Factors Influencing the Popularity of Branded Content of Integrated Resort in Social Media".
  • Mr Liu presented a co-authored paper asking "Could Tourism Lead the Economic Growth in Large Countries? The Case of the USA from a Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Perspective".
Professor Chon and Dr Qu Xiao attended the Asia-Pacific CHRIE January Board Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand on 15-16 January 2016. On 15 January, Professor Chon participated in panel sessions on "Top 5 Trends in Asia Pacific that will Impact Hospitality in the Next Few Years" and "21st Century Skills and Attributes Needed for Hospitality Industry Personnel" at the APacCHRIE Forum at Dusit Thani College to share his knowledge and discuss his experience with Dusit Thani College students, staff and faculty members.
Professor Rob Law, Dr Norman Au and Dr Dan Wang attended the 23rd Annual ENTER Conference in Bilbao, Spain on 2-5 February 2016. Professor Law presented a co-authored paper entitled "Managing Negative Electronic Word of Mouth (eWOM) from the Perspective of Luxury Hotel Managers". Dr Au presented a co-authored paper entitled "Customer Experiences with Hotel Smartphone - A Case Study of Hong Kong Hotels". Dr Wang presented a co-authored paper on "The Impact of the Sharing Economy on the Diversification of Tourism Products: Implications for Tourist Experience".
As part of the University Social Responsibility activities, Professor Kaye Chon participated in voluntary service for the earthquake relief program in Kathmandu, Nepal on 7-9 February 2016. At the invitation of the Nepal Chapter of PATA, Professor Chon offered a training session for 200 students from eight hospitality and tourism schools entitled "Human Capital Development Workshop on Tourism, World & Your Career" and another for 200 hospitality and tourism industry professionals entitled "Human Capital Development Workshop on Innovations & Leadership in Hospitality and Tourism".

Professor Brian King, Dr Denis Tolkach and Dr Vincent Tung attended the 26th Annual CAUTHE Conference in Sydney, Australia on 8-11 February 2016. Professor King chaired the concurrent session on "Marketing to the New Tourist (III)". Dr Tolkach presented a paper entitled "The Constant Trends of Tourism". Dr Tung was invited as a speaker for "The Annual CAUTHE Bill Faulkner Workshop for PhD Scholars and Early Career Researchers" and presented a co-authored paper entitled "Impact of Tourism Mini-Movies on Destination Image".
To support the 11th Session of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management Students' Association of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Students' Union, SHTM faculty and staff members participated in the SHTM Unity Dinner 2016 at the Happy Valley Racecourse on 19 February.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a keynote speech on "Innovations in the Tourism and MICE Industry" at the Korea International MICE Congress 2016 in Yeosu, Korea on 25-27 February.
Dr Stephen Pratt presented a paper entitled "Food Miles and Food Choices: The Case of an Upscale Urban Hotel" at Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos 2016 in Hong Kong on 7-12 March.
The SHTM Alumni Association held their annual dinner on 18 March 2016 at The Helena May, a century-old women's club and historic monument built in the Edwardian Classical Revival style. The dinner, which featured a "Roaring Twenties" theme, was attended by more than a hundred SHTM alumni, faculty and staff members who dressed in 1920s' party attire and competed for the Best Dressed Award.
Professor Brian King, Dr Norman Au and a group of SHTM students attended the Hotel Controllers and Accountants Association of Hong Kong Spring Dinner on 22 March 2016. The Association provides a way for hotel finance professionals in Hong Kong to share their knowledge and experience and learn from each other, and for students to develop professional networks.
