ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Miss Rubina Insam, student in the Master of Science in Global Hospitality Business programme, and Mr Thomas Tseng Pao-yuan, student in the Master of Science in International Tourism and Convention Management programme, were announced Winner and 1st Runner-up, respectively, of the Hyatt Student Prize 2015 at the competition's final staged at the Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez on 3 December. The Prize is a prestigious award launched by Hyatt Hotels and Resorts in 2008 to identify the most talented student in the hospitality industry.

The School held the SHTM Bar Tender of the Year Competition and SHTM Culinary Competition for students on 28 November 2015. Over 60 students from second year to final year participated, gaining further knowledge and developing confidence in their communication, time management and practical skills. The winners were:

SHTM Bar Tender of the Year Competition:
  • Champion: Mr Marvin Choi Ho-wai
  • First Runner-up: Mr Alvin Ching Chi-hong
  • Second Runner-up: Miss Bella Ma
SHTM Culinary Competition (Pasta):
  • Champions: Miss Yeung Wai-ting and Miss Lai Ngo-ching
  • First Runners-up: Mr Edmund To Fan-yu and Mr Tsui Man-chun
  • Second Runners-up: Miss Phoenix Tung and Miss Kate Mak
SHTM Culinary Competition (Pastry):
  • Champions: Miss Ng Yu-sum and Miss Wong Yuen-tung
  • First Runners-up: Miss Lu Ziyin and Miss Wu Jinghuan
  • Second Runners-up: Miss Tsai Hiu-leong and Miss Lau In-kwan
SHTM Culinary Competition (Duck):
  • Champions: Miss Phoenix Tung and Miss Kate Mak
  • First Runners-up: Mr Edmund To Fan-yu and Miss Miranda Chan Lok-sze
Bistro 1979, the SHTM's training restaurant, was again recognised for its efforts in carbon management at the CarbonCare® Label 2015 Award Ceremony held on 25 November. Twenty-seven awardees from various sectors were hailed as successful pioneers in implementing carbon reduction solutions and demonstrating their contributions to community-wide efforts in combating climate change.
Four SHTM undergraduate students, Miss Michelle Au-Yeung Sing-lee, Miss Sharen Kwan Hei-wing and Miss Alison Lam Tsz-ching of the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, and Miss Jasmine Chan Yin-tung of the BSc(Hons) in Tourism Management programme, recently received Rudy Choy Educational Fund Scholarships. The scholarships were presented at the Young SKAL Day on 28 October 2015 at the InterContinental Grand Stanford Hong Kong.
Mr Sam Hui Shao-huan, Mr Frank Liu, Miss Ivy Wang and Miss Sharon Yao Siyu, undergraduate students in the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, participated in the Young Hoteliers Summit Asia 2015 in Beijing, China on 23-25 October. Miss Yao and her team won first prize in the creativity challenge on the topic "The New Economy Modality - Sharing Economy".
Professor Cathy Hsu received the Best Paper Award for her paper entitled "Undergraduate Students' Learning Characteristics: Perspectives from Lecturers and Students" at the International Society of Travel and Tourism Educators 34th Annual Conference in Charlotte, USA on 15-17 October 2015.
