Unlocking the potential of AI edge intelligence and cloud-edge computing for flexible robotic and facility control system

: Data-driven, real time control and collaborative decision-making will be indispensable for future robotic and facility control systems. Advanced robot and robotic systems are ready to transform industrial and commercial operations, and able to perform tasks economically with superior perception, integrability, mobility and adaptability. However, robotic and facility control systems are brand-made products and have their own in-house solutions, which increase the difficulties in deploying multiple sets of robots in companies.

Motivated by this foresighted challenge, this proposal aims to develop a unified system by coordinating intelligence of robotic and facility units at the edge and cloud-edge computing. At the local level, certain robotic and facility control decisions can be made by artificial intelligence (AI) via real-time sensing technology for quick decision making. At the cloud level, the digitalisation of physical robot and facility operations via cloud-edge computing and hybrid crowd sensing technology can provide a holistic view and centralised control of all the smart units in the cyber-physical system architecture. The system can be easily extended to new smart units via add-on service. With this smart connected service design paradigms, companies can achieve a high level of real-time context and situational awareness of smart units via digitalisation and servitisation.
