Redevelopment of Blocks VA and VS

site mapRedevelopment of Blocks VA and VS into a Modern Academic Complex for Professional Health Training

PolyU has long been committed to nurturing health professionals. With a view to increasing the student intake in health related fields in order to meet rising demands for healthcare services in Hong Kong, the University sees the need to expand its teaching and learning facilities.

In the 2018 Policy Address, the HKSAR Government responded to the need of professional healthcare training, and earmarked about HK$20 billion for upgrading and increasing the teaching facilities of three local universities including PolyU.

As a result, the University proposes to redevelop a site on the west side of the campus currently housing the Michael Clinton Swimming Pool, Shaw Sports Complex, Shaw Amenity Complex and Fong Shu Chuen Hall. The redevelopment plan aims to optimise site usage by not only providing the necessary additional academic space for an increase in student intake, but also incorporating innovative and sustainable design to enhance the learning environment.

Objectives of the project:

  • To provide additional academic space to meet the needs of an increased student intake to address long-term healthcare manpower needs
  • To reprovision and upgrade existing facilities
  • To build a new vehicular entrance to the University from Chatham Road South

Design Vision

The redevelopment project aims to create a modern academic complex as a new PolyU landmark, allowing the University community and its visitors to utilise its diverse academic and sports facilities, as well as the wide expanse of open collaborative space.

The multi-purpose functionality of the complex will lead to a large construction floor area during redevelopment. In view of the large building bulk and the permitted height restriction of the construction project, the project consultant has proposed breaking down the massing to suit the environment of the PolyU campus.

As a result, three unique design options have been proposed and summarised as follows.
