News

During 23-24 June 2021, a delegation of distinguished Chinese astronautical scientists who spearhead China’s key space programmes from manned missions to lunar and Mars explorations visited PolyU and delivered lectures. Prof. WU Bo, Associate Head of LSGI, also received and greeted the distinguished guests, SUN Zezhou and ZHANG He, chief designer of Tianwen-1 Mars probe’s and executive director of the Chang'e-4 lunar probe project respectively, at the Planetary Remote Sensing Lab of LSGI on 23 June.

Prof. Wu and his team dedicated their effort on research on 3D mapping of planets including moon and Mars for supporting China’s space missions. The team forcuses on the 3D topography of these planetary bodies provides vital insights into their geological history and supports optimal mission design (e.g., assessing landing sites). During the lab tour, Prof. Wu shares the technologies used to support the successful landing of China’s first Mars mission Tianwen-1. Namely photogrammetry, laser altimetry and photoclinometry. The technologies were also used in China’s other space missions, such as Chang’ E-4 and Chang’ E-5, and will likely be applied in future space missions.

On 24 June, ZHANG He, executive director of the Chang’e-4 lunar probe project; XIE Jun, chief designer of the third generation BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS-3); and Prof. TENG Jin-Guang, President of PolyU visited the Navigation Lab of LSGI. Prof. CHEN Wu, Head of LSGI and in-charge of Navigation Lab, received the guests and shared the latest research project and collaboration with BeiDou.
