A PolyU team of Mechanical Engineering students of the undergraduate won the Champion and the Most Innovative Awards in the 7th IMechE Greater China Design Competition held at Guangzhou on 24-25 March 2018.

The PolyU team, comprised of third-year undergraduate students, Shin Ji-ho, Roy Chow Hung-ming and Rudra Someshwar, under the supervision of Dr Henry Chu and Ir Dr Curtis Ng of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, designed and created a robot, which could successfully move across different terrains for material transport. The PolyU team robot stood out from other competitors. The robot topped off the challenge in the competition with the full smoothness and highest efficiency.

Two teams of occupational therapy students from PolyU’s Department of Rehabilitation Sciences (RS) received awards at the 12th International Convention on Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology (i-CREATe) held on 13-16 July 2018 in Shanghai.

Four Master of Occupational Therapy students pocketed the Silver Award under the Design category. Their invention, The Cupensator, minimizes unwanted oscillations. Users can hold the cup and drink in a firm manner, making the daily activity of drinking safe, independent and effective.

Meanwhile, a team of BSc(Hons) in Occupational Therapy Year 3 students walked away with the Best Presentation Award under the Design category for their StoPanel, which aims to increase the independence of visually-impaired users in taking public transport.

A team of four ITC students participated in the prestigious Future Retail Challenge student competition in Madrid, Spain on 19 April 2018, and were awarded the championship.

Megan Ko, Cherry Lau, Megan Leung and Lucy Yip won the competition with their concept of ‘V.Farm’, which meant vertical farming, for a building. The farm would be integrated with advanced technologies and include components such as aeroponic and hydroponic systems, smart LED lights, robot gardeners, as well as artificial intelligence (AI). By renting the plots to individuals, families, and retailers, together with other green retailtainment experience services, the initiative was anticipated to break-even in two years, which was the key element to winning the championship.

A team of Mechanical Engineering students of the undergraduate — Fung Man-yi, Wong Hei-wa and Pang Wei-fong — won the Champion and the Best Innovative Award in the HKIE Joint Student Chapters Competition 2018 with their final-year capstone project titled  Design and Construction of an Innovative Energy Conversion Device under the supervision of Dr Lam Chun-ki.

A team of BEng in Mechanical Engineering students won the 1st Runner-up in The 2018 American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Student Design Competition (SDC) held on 11 November 2018 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. 

The PolyU team, comprised of year-four undergraduate students, Stanley Go, Lam Kah-cheng and Cheung Lap-wing, under the supervision of Ir Dr Curtis Ng, designed and created a three-battery-powered robot with a strategic mind which could effectively shoot balls right to the competitors’ gates and strongly defense its own gate, this ended up in scoring high marks to win the competition.

ASME

Bao Qiancheng, a year-four Product Design student won the PENSOLE World Sneaker Championship 2018. His impressive design was inspired by the perspective lines of the crowded skyscrapers and neon signs in the metropolis Hong Kong. These inspirations became the radical direction shoelace system and the translucent soft TPU bar fused on the shoes. The design outcome was a clean and iconic silhouette and innovative structure, which made it stand out from all the competitors.

Three ITC graduating BA students received awards at The 8th Hong Kong Young Knitwear Designers’ Contest which was organized by the Knitwear Innovation and Design Society (KIDS). 

Keith Chen Jianfeng, won the Champion for his design titled NOH: Image Fusion. His design idea was inspired by Noh. Noh is a Japanese musical drama in which the leading actors wear masks.

Dorothy Yeung Pui-mei, was the 2nd runner-up with her collection titled Smile+. Smile+ was inspired by a Hong Kong news report and her own personal experience.

Shirley Yeung Chit-yiu, received the Best Use of Australian Merino Wool Award. Her collection titled I am worse than you think was inspired by the Japanese underworld.
